Grimethorpe born Freddie Fletcher is an actor who is best known for his role as Jud Casper, the bullying brother in Ken Loach's classic 1969 film Kes. Prior to the film, Fletcher had no acting experience and was working as a painter and decorator but, after the film proved a success, Fletcher secured a number of TV roles, most notably as layabout Raymond Shepherd, one of Diana Dors's wayward sons in the popular comedy series Queenie's Castle. Roles in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, All Creatures Great and Small, Children's Ward and Heartbeat followed, along with four Play for Today's, Jack Rosenthal's Another Sunday and Sweet F.A. and the 1974 film Juggernaut. His last acting role was as Judd the barman in the 1996 movie When Saturday Comes. The film, about Sheffield United, starred Sean Bean who recommended him for the part. Fletcher still lives in Grimethorpe with his wife, Joy, who was Willowgarth School's non-teaching Head of Year.

John McCleod: 안소니 홉킨스 분)과 아내(Susan McCleod: 캐롤린 모티머 분), 아들 데이빗(David McCleod: 아담 브리지 분), 딸 낸시(Nancy McCleod: 레베카 브리지 분)도 있다. 브리태닉 호가 소속한 서버린 선박 회사의 니콜러스 포터(Nicholas Porter: 이안 홈 분) 사장에게 자칭 저가노트(Juggernaut: 프레디 존스 분)라는 사람의 전화가 걸려온다. 브리태닉 호에는 '아마톨' 폭약 일곱 드럼이 실려있는데, 내일 새벽, 즉 22시간 뒤에 터지도록 시한장치를 해놨다는 것이다. 50만 파운드를 내야 해체 방법을 알려준다고 한다. 포터 사장, 경찰청의 머클레엇 수사과장, 공군의 마더 중령(Commander Marder: 줄리안 글로버 분)과 폭탄전문가인 팔론 소령(Fallon: 리차드 해리스 분), 외무부의 간부 휴즈 등이 모여 대책회의를 연 이들은 범인의 요구를 무시하고 폭탄을 해체하는 쪽으로 의견을 모은다. 팔론 소령이 대원들을 이끌고 브리태닉 호에 낙하산으로 투하된다. 배에 오른 해체팀이 폭약이 든 드럼통의 내부를 진단한 결과 정교한 시한장치가 들어있었다. 스스로 챔피언이라고 자랑하는 팔론 소령이지만 그 정교한 시한장치에는 혀를 내두른다. 하나하나 해체해 나가지만, 도중에 실수로 부하 찰리(Charlie Braddock: 데이빗 허밍스 분)를 잃은 팔론은 자신의 한계를 느껴 포기한다. 이젠 범인의 요구대로 돈을 줄 수밖에 없다. 돈을 주고 머클레엇 등 수사관들이 범인의 하수인을 미행한다. 하지만 미행한 사실에 분노한 범인은 배가 폭파되도록 내버려두겠다고 하는데.

영국 요크셔의 탄광촌에서 아빠 없이 배다른 형 주드와 엄마와 함께 사는 15세 소년 빌리는 또래 아이들에 비해서도 유난히 작고 깡마른 아이다. 신문 돌리는 일로 하루를 시작하는 빌리의 인생은 미래를 꿈꾸는 희망찬 청소년의 삶과는 거리가 멀다. 탄광에서 일하는 형 주드는 기분 내키는 대로 빌리에게 온갖 심술을 부린다. 형이 빌리 몫의 우유를 마셔버리는가 하면 신문 배달을 해야 하는 빌리의 자전거를 타고 나가버리는 바람에, 빌리는 아침부터 신문 가방을 들고 뛰어 다니면서 남의 집 앞에 배달된 우유를 슬쩍해서 끼니를 때운다. 빌리에게 외상 담배 심부름을 시키는 엄마 역시 빌리에겐 관심이 없다. 탄광촌에서 매일 고된 노동을 하며 힘들게 살아가는 형과 엄마의 유일한 위안거리는 주말에 친구들과 함께 술집에서 신나는 음악을 들으며 맥주 한잔을 마시는 것과 경마에 돈을 걸고 결과를 기다리는 것뿐이다. 공부엔 관심이 없는 빌리는 학교에서도 별다른 주목을 받지 못하고 친구들에게 따돌림을 당하며, 선생님께 혼나고, 벌을 받는 게 일상생활이 되어 버렸다. 그러던 어는 날 자유롭게 날아다니며 사냥을 하는 매의 모습에 매료된 빌리는 어미가 떠난 둥지에서 새끼 매 한 마리를 데려다 키우기 시작한다. 그 후 빌리는 매에게 ‘케스’라는 이름도 지어주고, 케스를 주의 깊게 관찰하며, 서점에서 훔친 매에 관련된 책을 보면서 케스를 돌봐주고 매의 성장 단계에 따라 체계적으로 훈련시킨다. 그러나 경마에 배팅하라고 준 돈으로 빌리가 케스의 먹이를 사버리자, 화가 난 형 주드는 케스를 죽여 버리고, 빌리는 둘이 함께 훈련하던 곳으로 가서 한쪽 구석에 케스를 묻어준다.
