사이몬 머레이(폴 폭스)는 프랑스 외인 부대에 합류하여 엄격하고 힘겨운 훈련을 받게 된다. 처음에는 어색했던 부대원들이었지만 교관의 횡포에 가까운 훈련을 받으면서 점점 사이가 돈독해진다. 그 중에서도 사이몬와 마음이 제일 맞았던 건 바로 파스칼(톰 하디)로 비록 거친 성격에 마음에 불만을 가지고 있는 그였지만 점점 사이가 좋아진다. 강한 훈련을 마치고 정식 상병으로 임명받은 그들은 짧은 기간의 휴가를 가지게 되고, 휴가 도중 사이몬은 친구로부터 온 편지를 받고 시내로 향한다. 시내에서 친구와 만난 사이몬은 어딘가 이상한 느낌이 드는 여인을 뒤쫓다 폭탄 테러에 휘말리게 되고 그 자리를 도망친다. 도망치던 중 전날 만났던 제니퍼란 여인과 마주친 둘은 함께 도망가게 되고 서로에게 호감을 느낀다. 휴가를 끝낸 외인 부대는 알제리민족해방전선 단체가 숨어있는 곳을 알기 위해 길잡이를 붙잡게 되었고, 그자가 가는 곳으로 향하던 그들은 오히려 역습을 당하고 큰 피해를 입게 된다. 본부에 지원을 요청하여 헬기를 동원, 단체를 소탕하지만 일반인들도 섞여있음을 알게 된 사이몬은 마음이 어지러워진다. 한편 부대는 시내에 숨은 무장단체를 색출하기 위해 시내로 군대를 파견하게 되고 일반인들을 인질로 잡는다. 사이몬은 점점 상부의 명령과 전쟁의 정의에 대한 의문을 느끼게 되는데…
