브뉘엘의 또 다른 영화 "트리스티나"의 원저자이자, 톨스토이, 발작, 졸라, 디킨스와 비유되는 위대한 스페인 작가인 베니토 페레스 갈도스의 원작 소설을 각색한 작품. 브뉘엘은 19세기 스페인을 배경으로 한 원작과는 달리 "나자린"의 배경을 독재 정권이 지배하던 19세기말의 멕시코로 옮겨 그리스도의 계율에 따라 엄격하게 살고자 하는 성직자의 퇴락의 과정을 심오하게 그리고 있다. 이 영화에서 브뉘엘은 성직자 또한 인간임을 보여준다. 그런 점에서 옥타비오 파스는 이 작품이 '인간의 조건을 드러냄과 동시에 그것을 넘어서는 방법을 보여준다. 나자리오는 신을 잃어버렸지만 사랑과 형제애를 발견한다'라고 평했다. 이 영화에 담긴 그리스도에 대한 헌신, 신앙, 희망, 고통과 인간에 대한 사랑과 형제애에 대한 모호성 때문에 성직자들은 이 영화를 종교적인 영화로 받아들였고, 무신론자들은 이 영화를 신성모독을 보여주는 대표작으로 손꼽고 있다.

<황금 시대>와 <빵 없는 대지> 이후에 루이스 부뉴엘은 잠정적으로 영화를 만들지 않았다. 오랜 침묵 끝에 멕시코에서 만든 이 작품은 부뉴엘 자신이 시나리오를 쓰고 연출과 편집을 했기에 그의 예술적 자유와 사유가 가득 묻어있는 작품이다. 한달 만에 저예산으로 제작된 이 영화는 대도시 외곽의 청소년 탈선 문제를 잔혹하게 다루고 있지만 본질적으로 이 작품의 주제는 사랑 받지 못한 아이들에 관한 슬픈 이야기이다. 잔혹함을 통해 부뉴엘은 역설적으로 부패하지 않는 인간의 존엄성을 그려낸다. 그래서 이 영화는 처연한 아름다움을 풍긴다. 앙드레 바쟁은 이 영화의 미덕이 잔인함 속에서 아름다움을 찾아내고, 데카당스한 가운데 인간의 존엄성에 대한 숭고한 인내를 보여줌으로써 잔혹함을 사랑과 열정의 행위로 변형시키는데 있다고 지적했다. 바쟁은 또한 이 영화가 ‘사랑에 관한 영화이며 사랑을 필요로 하는 영화’라고 말했다.

Cantinflas works as a porter, who writes letters and speeches in his old writing machine to earn an extra money, despite the fact that he still goes to school. The sentimental issues come when Cantinflas falls in love of his pretty neighborhood (Silvia Pinal), who is handicapped and unable to walk. The thing wont be easy, because a young military man also has feelings for the girl. But the porter wants to see her happy, and he will become a sort of Cyrano De Bergerac, writing love letters to her signed by the young soldier. His plan is simple: to win money in the horse races in order to pay the operation which will make her walk again.
