They say the darkest hour is just before dawn, and at the Sunrise diner it's very late indeed. Four couples find themselves at an out-of-the-way 24-hour diner, but they are not all that they seem. Intertwined throughout the night are a middle age couple who are at a crisis in their lives, a cook who thinks he is finally finding his way forward, a waitress in a bad relationship and a young punk and his girlfriend who think this is the last stop before the new world of imagined ease. But the strangest of all are the dark stranger and young girl who don't seem to be part of this world. A film about dreams gone bad, missed opportunities, love, fear and death.

마크 휘태커는 일류대학을 졸업하고 대기업에 입사, 자신의 능력을 최대한 빨리 인정받아 고위 간부로 승진한다. 농산물 비즈니스계의 거대 기업 ADM(Archer Daniels Midland)의 스타 부사장이자 전도 유망한 기업인으로 인정 받은 휘태커. 하지만, 그의 인생의 반전 드라마는 이제부터 시작이다. 고위 간부가 된 휘태커의 눈에 보이기 시작한 건 회사에서 자행되는 온갖 불법적인 행위들. 그는 회사의 다국적 가격 담합 음모를 FBI에 제보한다. 그는 스스로 이런 양심적인 행동을 함으로서 일반 대중들에게 양심적이고 정직한 기업가로 인정받아 ADM내에서 자신의 위상이 더 높아지길 바랐던 것. 이제 스스로 내부고발자가 된 휘태커는 몸에 도청기를 붙이고, 가방에 녹음기를 숨기고 위험을 감수한 채 자신이 비밀 요원이 된 듯 임무 수행에 돌입한다. 하지만 점점 휘태커의 머리 속은 복잡해지고 현실과 상상이 구분이 안가기 시작한다. 도대체 뭐가 어떻게 잘못되기 시작한 것인지?

방송국 청소부로 일하는 조는 우연한 기회에 라디오 토크쇼에 출연해 부모를 찾으러 다니며 겪은 사연을 이야기하게 된다. 부모에 대한 단서를 주리라 기대하고 찾아간 사람은 연쇄 살인범이었다는 식의 황당한 이야기가 방송되면서 조는 일약 유명인사가 된다. 결국 조는 부모를 찾는 대신 사랑을 얻게 된다.

시카고 캘리포니아 대학, 메이아 신부는 수많은 학생들 앞에서 17년전 악령에 씌운 한 소녀를 구해줬던 기억을 되살리며 세미나의 주제를 발표한다. 단란한 가정의 주부 낸시는 텔레비젼 화면을 보다가 악령에 씌어 발악을 하고 급기야는 악마가 메이아 신부에게 까지 옮겨가게 된다. 한편 상업성에 눈이 먼 부부 텔레비젼 전도사는 공포의 악령을 팔아 돈을 벌기 위해 엑소시즘의 필요성을 강조하며 ＇어니스트와 화니의 심야 엑소시즘＇이라는 텔레비젼의 생중계를 제안한다. 이에 시청자들은 경악하고, 결국 메이아 신부는 포박, 기도, 성수, 몽둥이질, 로큰롤까지 동원하여 악령을 쫓아내는데 성공한다. 그리고 세미나의 주제 발표가 끝날 무렵 낸시가 등장하여 이야기속의 주인공이 사실을 확인시켜 준다.
