In this French crime film, set during the time of the Gulf War, an elderly German tourist is murdered in Paris by junk dealer Joseph Katz (Pinkas Braun), a friend of Paris detective Sam Bellamy (singer Patrick Bruel). Romantically involved with the victim's daughter Emma Guter (Isabella Ferrari), Bellamy covers up the crime he witnessed. Joseph then mysteriously vanishes, and Bellamy heads for Berlin where the victim's possessions are auctioned. After Bellamy finds the source of the well-hidden traffic in art stolen by Nazis from French Jews, he discovers a Nazi war criminal is blackmailing past associates. Incorporating background from journalist Hector Feliciano's Lost Museum, the film is adapted from Guy Konopnicki's novel, Pas de Kaddish pour Sylberstein (No Kaddish for Sylberstein).

Mike Max is a Hollywood producer who became powerful and rich thanks to brutal and bloody action films. His ignored wife Paige is close to leaving him. Suddenly Mike is kidnapped by two bandits, but escapes and hides out with his Mexican gardener's family for a while. At the same time, surveillance expert Ray Bering is looking for what happens in the city, but it is not clear what he wants. The police investigation for Max's disappearance is led by detective Doc Block, who falls in love with actress Cat who is playing in ongoing Max's production.

헨리(Henry Harriston: 윌리암 허트 분)는 전형적인 뉴요커이며 성공한 정신과 의사다. 일상의 따분함과 성공의 무료함에 휩싸인 헨리는 충동적으로 파리판 트리뷴지에 광고를 싣는다. ‘6주간 뉴욕의 아파트 교환, 화분과 개, 기타 등 등을 돌봐야 함’. 천성적인 상냥함으로 뭇 남성들의 흠모를 받는 발레리나 베아트리체(Beatrice Saulnier: 줄리엣 비노슈 분)는 파리의 허름한 서민용 아파트에서 이 광고를 발견한다. 곧이어 두 사람은 대서양을 건너 각자의 집을 바꾸게 되고, 이들 앞에는 새로운 삶이 펼쳐진다. 파리의 달동네 같은 누추한 서민용 아파트에 짐을 푼 헨리. 뉴욕의 호화 아파트에 짐을 푼 베아트리체. 단순히 각자의 거처를 떠나 머리를 식히려던 이들에겐 당연히 생활의 혼란이 함께 한다. 헨리가 파리에서 베아트리체의 사랑을 갈구하는 남자들에게 시달리는 동안, 베아트리체는 헨리를 찾아오는 고객들의 하소연을 들어주다 차츰 심도깊은 상담을 하게 된다. 대부분이 남자들인 헨리의 고객들은 자신들의 이야기를 끝까지 들어주는 베아트리체의 솔직함과 매력에 이끌려 헨리의 상담 때와는 달리 그녀와의 시간을 기다리고, 환자는 자꾸 늘어만 간다. 베아트리체의 어수선한 아파트에서 묵는 헨리는 베아트리체 앞으로 도착한 수많은 러브 레터를 하나하나 읽어가며 그녀에 대한 관심을 갖게 된다. 결국 일정보다 2주 먼저 뉴욕에 들어오게 된 헨리는 환자를 가장해 베아트리체의 카우치에 눕게 된다. 그리고 어느 사이엔가 자신의 깊은 속내를 털어놓게 되고, 호기심이 사랑으로 변해가는 것을 느낀다. 베아트리체 역시 일방적으로 구애를 받아오던 처지에서, 이제는 이지적이고 냉담한 듯한 헨리에게 마음이 끌린다.

독일어를 모국어처럼 유창하게 구사하는 미모의 처녀 린다는 얼음처럼 차거운 사나이 리랜드의 비서로 일하게 된다. 눈치빠른 린다는 리랜드가 회사 중역을 가장한 첩보요원임을 알게 되고, 두사람은 연인 관계로 발전한다. 진주만 기습을 계기로 미국이 본격적으로 전쟁에 개입하게 되자 리랜드는 원래의 신분인 국방부 대령으로 돌아가 해외 첩보공작을 맡는다. 독일에서 비밀 신무기가 개발되고 있다는 정보가 입수되고, 그 비밀 공장 위치를 추적하던 요원이 살해되자, 린다는 반대하는 리랜드를 설득, 스파이의 기본 훈련도 받지 않은 채 독일에 투입된다. 비밀무기 개발 책임자 디트리히 장군집의 보모로 들어간 린다는 연합군이 애타게 기다리던 비밀무기에 대한 정보를 마이크로 필름에 담아서 도망쳐 나오지만 믿었던 독일처녀 마그레트의 배신으로 총에 맞아 부상당한다. 리랜드는 독일장교로 위장하고 베를린으로 침투하여 린다를 찾아내고 스위스로 데리고 나간다. 스위스 국경에서 독일군 검문에 걸려 총격전을 벌리면서 린다를 안고 탈출하던 리랜드는 적의 총에 맞아 쓰러지면서도 스위스 국경을 넘는데 성공한다.
