India, 1825: the country lives in mortal fear of cult members known as the “Deceivers." They commit robbery and ritualistic murder. Appalled by their activities, an English military man, Captain William Savage, conceives a hazardous plot to stop them. In disguise, he plans to himself become a “Deceiver” and infiltrate their numbers. Ever present in Savage’s adventures is a sense of dread; he is in constant fear of betrayal and vengeance and also undergoes a disturbing psychological transformation as he experiences the cult’s blood lust firsthand.

Police Inspector Ghote lives a middle-class life in Bombay along with his wife, Pratima. He has been employed with the Bombay Police for many years. He is assigned to investigate the deadly assault on a Parsi man named Perfect, who is the Secretary of Lala Heera Lal, a wealthy man with underworld links. Inspector Ghote commences his investigation and is displeased when his superiors ask him to work with a Swedish Forensic Expert by the name of Axel Svennson.

영국인 아델라(주디 데이비스 분)는 인도에서 치안 판사로 근무하는 약혼자 로니를 만나기 위해 그의 어머니인 무어 부인(페기 애쉬크로프트 분)과 함께 인도로 향한다. 역에서 로니의 마중을 받은 두 사람은 영국인 전용 관저에 짐을 푼다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 판에 박힌 인도 생활에 염증을 느낀 모어 부인은 우연히 인도인 의사, 아지즈(빅토르 바네르지 분)를 만나게 되고 아델라 또한 그를 통해 인도인들과 가까워진다. 또한 아델라는 인종차별주의자인 로니에게서 실망감을 느끼고 결혼을 망설이게 된다. 그런 어느 날, 아지즈는 유적 마라바 동굴의 여행을 제의하고, 인도인들과 가깝게 지내는 필딩 교수와 무어 부인, 아델라, 그리고 인도인 가드볼리 교수가 함께 떠나기로 한다. 여행 당일, 가드볼리와 필딩이 늦는 바람에 무어 부인과 아데라, 아지즈만이 기차를 탄다. 많은 인도인들 사이에서 색다른 동양의 문화를 느끼는 아델라. 그러나 아지즈에 의지해 산에 오르던 아델라는 무더운 날씨와 음습한 동굴이 주는 은밀함과 인도에 온 후로 가슴속에서 꿈틀거리던 욕망에 휩싸인다. 동굴 속의 신비스러운 메아리에 도취된 그녀는 아즈지가 자신을 능욕하려 했다는 착란을 일으킨다. 여행에서 돌아 온 후 아지즈는 아델라의 강간혐의로 기소되고 이 사건은 인도 전체의 인종 차별문제로 확산되는데...

19세기 인도 사티푸르, 더글러스 리버스(크리스토퍼 카제노브)는 그의 아내 올리비아(그레타 스카치)가 더 이상 병원에 있지 않아도 된다는 얘기를 듣는다. 아내에 대한 얘기를 듣고는 리버스는 눈물을 흘린다. 그리고 시간이 흘러 1982년 사티푸르, 올리비아의 손녀인 앤(줄리 크리스티)은 한 남자로부터 올리비아에 대한 얘기를 전해 듣는다. 그렇게 앤은 인도에 도착해서 올리비아의 행적을 추적하게 된다. 그리고 다시 영화는 19세기로 넘어가고 인도의 중요한 행사에 초대된 올리비아를 보여준다. 올리비아는 남편과 함께 당시 인도 영국인 상류사회의 모임에 참석해 많은 얘기를 나누게 된다. 그 모임에서 여러 다른 부인들과도 만나지만 그런 것에는 별 관심이 없다. 그러면서 알게 된 인도의 지배자 나와브(샤시 카푸르)와 함께 나들이를 떠나기도 한다. 나와브와 그 하수인들과 함께 게임을 하면서 즐거이 시간을 보낸다. 그러니까 그 영국인 상류사회로부터는 한 발짝 비껴난 인물이다. 다시 현재로 돌아오면 한 인도 남자와 함께 올리비아를 연구하던 앤이, 당시 나와브과 사랑에 빠졌던 올리비아의 전철을 그대로 밟게 되는 것을 보게 된다. 그렇게 앤은 당시 온갖 스캔들의 주인공이었던 올리비아의 길을 따르면서 자신의 삶을 반추하게 된다.

영국에 유학해 변호사 자격을 딴 간디(벤 킹슬리)는 1893년 남아프리카에 가 소송사건을 맡는다. 간디는 그 곳에서 유색인종에 대한 차별대우를 받게 된다. 이를 계기로 그는 남아프리카의 인도 거류민을 돕기 위한 다양한 활동을 시작한다. 이후 1915년, 간디는 인도로 돌아와 인도독립을 위한 노력을 하게 된다. 그는 비폭력운동을 주도하면서 수차례 투옥되기도 한다. 인도는 마침내 1947년 8월 영국으로부터 독립을 이룬다. 그러나 힌두교와 이슬람교의 종교적 대립으로 인해 인도와 파키스탄으로 나뉘어 독립을 하게 된다. 이후에도 종교분쟁을 해결하기 위해 노력했던 간디는 1948년 1월 과격파 힌두교도가 쏜 총탄에 암살당한다.

Rajesh is in love with Kamini in their college days. But he chooses to become a revolutionary freedom fighter and abandons Kamini due to the fear that he might die during his struggle leaving her as a widow. The vicissitude of time, however, gets Kamini married to Dheeraj Kumar, a police inspector, and also a friend of Rajesh. Rajesh takes refuge at Dheeraj's government quarters and encounters his past as he meets Kamini again. Eventually, Dheeraj finds out about their past relationship. He is encountered with the challenge of believing the chastity of his marriage or the doubt in his mind whether his trust has been broken while he was away from home on duty.

One condition prevents young Leena (Leena Chandravarkar) from receiving her inheritance: She's unwed -- and until she marries, her uncle won't relinquish her legacy. When the frustrated Leena meets jobless Sanjeev (Sanjeev Kumar), the duo concocts a quid-pro-quo scheme: For a sum, Sanjeev will temporarily pose as her spouse. But once Leena has her fortune in hand, she's ready for "hubby" to make tracks.

In the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, particularly in the Chambal Ravine there are abundance of bandit gangs, chiefly consisting of Brahmans and Thakurs, both carrying on their age-old rivalry and hatred for each other from generation to generation. Our story revolves around Brahman Pandit Tulsiram who betrays Thakur Bahadur Singh to the police, and as a result Bahadur is sentenced to be hanged.
