영국에 유학해 변호사 자격을 딴 간디(벤 킹슬리)는 1893년 남아프리카에 가 소송사건을 맡는다. 간디는 그 곳에서 유색인종에 대한 차별대우를 받게 된다. 이를 계기로 그는 남아프리카의 인도 거류민을 돕기 위한 다양한 활동을 시작한다. 이후 1915년, 간디는 인도로 돌아와 인도독립을 위한 노력을 하게 된다. 그는 비폭력운동을 주도하면서 수차례 투옥되기도 한다. 인도는 마침내 1947년 8월 영국으로부터 독립을 이룬다. 그러나 힌두교와 이슬람교의 종교적 대립으로 인해 인도와 파키스탄으로 나뉘어 독립을 하게 된다. 이후에도 종교분쟁을 해결하기 위해 노력했던 간디는 1948년 1월 과격파 힌두교도가 쏜 총탄에 암살당한다.
Story
Dr. Sunil Gupta lives a wealthy lifestyle with his wife, Aarti. Although they have been married for several years, they do not have any children. Aarti did get pregnant once, but failed to conceive. Aarti decides to travel to take a break in their Khandala bungalow, which is also in the neighborhood of Aarti's sister Vidya, her son, Raju and her husband's house. Since her bungalow is being decorated by Vinod, whom she remembers as her fellow collegian, both spend considerable time together. When Vinod finds out that Aarti is basically alone most of the time, he proposes to her - but Aarti rejects him, a physical tussle ensues, Aarti grabs a revolver, a shot is fired, Vinod falls down the stairs and dies. Vidya assists Aarti in disposing off his body.

Raja (Dev Anand) has been abandoned by his biological mother at a very young age, and grows up with Master (Jeevan), a criminal don and card-sharp, who would like Raja to continue working with him on a commission basis. Raja learns all that could be learned about playing cards, quits work with Master, and starts work on his own. He succeeds considerably, and soon gets rich and wealthy. He falls in love with beautiful Chandra Gangaram (Zaheeda), and would like to marry her. But her father would like her to marry U.K. settled Ram Mehta(Sudhir), before Raja could do or say anything against this alliance, he is charged with the cold-blooded murder of Master. The climax in Raja's life is in the Court Room where he will find out about his past, and about his parents - while he awaits the outcome of the trial. She too is impressed by Devutt's poems and invites him over to her house for a party, and again both are attracted to each other. Knowing fully well that he cannot marry three women in his country, a tortured and uncertain Devdutt must now make up his mind as who he wants as his life-partner.
