한때 예술품 절도계의 큰 손으로 이름을 날리던 크런치(커트 러셀)는 이복동생 니키(맷 딜런)의 배신으로 7년을 감옥에서 썩고 출감한다. 그의 팀은 해체됐고, 먹고 살기 위해 그가 할 수 있은 목숨을 건 싸구려 모터쇼뿐. 그나마 자신을 따르는 견습생 프랜시(제이 바루첼)와 연인 로라(캐서린 원닉)만이 그의 곁에 남아있다. 한편 조르쥐 쇠라의 명작 “등을 보인 포즈”가 도난 당하고, 수사관 빅은 니키를 주목한다. 7년만에 조우한 니키와 크런치는 한바탕 주먹질 끝에 옛 실력을 발휘해 마지막 한탕을 모의한다. 바로 예술품 수집가인 줄리어스 프리드먼의 야고보 원복음서가 운반책의 실수로 국경 경비대 보관실에 있다는 것. 니키와 크런치는 고서를 빼돌려 줄리어스에게 넘기고 돈을 챙기기로 한 것이다. 정보 담당 패디 삼촌, 아이디어맨 니키, 위조 담당 가이, 견습생 프랜시, 그리고 운전을 맡은 크런치까지 최고의 팀이 다시 뭉쳐 큰 한 탕을 계획하는데…
