미국 전역을 떠들썩하게 하는 악당 제시 제임스(브래드 피트)는 청년 로버트 포드(케이시 애플렉)의 우상이자 동경의 대상이다. 그의 업적을 적은 책들을 사보며 그와 같이 되고 싶어하는 로버트 포드는 우연한 기회에 제시 제임스 갱단의 일원이 될 기회를 얻는다. 실제 가까이에서 본 제시는 다소 다혈질적이고 책에서와 같이 마냥 전설적인 행동만 하는 것이 아님을 알게 된 로버트 포드는 점점 그에게 실망하게 되고, 자신의 형과 자신의 실수로 인해 언제 제시에게 살해당할지 모른다는 두려움으로 그를 살해할 계획을 세우게 된다.
