Mr. Mermelstein (Leonard Nimoy) and Mrs. Mermelstein (Blythe Danner) a true-life California couple, thrown into the spotlight of judicial history in the 1980s. He is a Hungarian-born Jew, sole-survivor of his family's extermination at Auschwitz, and she is a Southern Baptist from Tennessee. Their four children are good kids, typical Americans, with just enough orneriness to irritate each other, but enough love and class to pull together when it counts. When challenged by a hate group to prove that Jews were actually gassed at Auschwitz, Mel Mermelstein rises to the occasion with the support of his wife and children, in spite of the dangers to himself, his business, and his family. William John Cox (Dabney Coleman) provides legal help (pro bono) as a lawyer, originally a Roman Catholic from Texas.

1928년 뉴욕. 마조리 키난 롤링스(메리 스틴버겐)는 출판사로부터 자신의 소설 출판을 거절당한다. 그 일이 있은 후 롤링스는 남편에게 플로리다 주에 위치한 크로스 크리크라는 곳에 있는 작은 오렌지 농장을 구입했으니 함께 들어가서 살자고 하지만 이마저 거절당한다. 결국 혼자서 자동차를 몰고 그곳까지 가다가 농장 인근에서 차가 고장 난다. 인근에 사는 노턴 바스킨(피터 코요테)는 그녀에게 호감을 느끼고 자신의 차로 그녀를 오렌지 농장에 있는 황량한 오두막집까지 태워다 준다. 다 쓰러져가는 오두막과 온통 먼지투성이인 집안 살림에 롤링스는 당황하지만 흑인 여인 ‘기치’가 오두막을 불쑥 찾아와 적은 급료라도 좋으니 가정부로 일하게 해달라고 하면서 점차 크리스 크로스에서의 생활에 익숙해져 간다. 그리고 인근에 산다는 마쉬 터너(립 톤)가 딸 엘리(다나 힐), 그리고 엘리가 키우는 새끼 사슴 ‘플랙’과 함께 롤링스를 찾아오면서 이웃들과의 교류도 시작된다. 하지만 농장 운영은 생각보다 어려웠고 이웃들과의 교류도 생각처럼 쉽지만은 않다. 롤링스는 새로운 소설을 쓰면서 인근 주민들을 고용해서 농장에 물을 댈 관개 수로를 새로 정비하며 농장에는 활력이 찾아온다. 어느 날 롤링스가 엘리의 14번째 생일을 맞아 마쉬의 집을 찾아간다. 그런데 엘리가 키우던 플랙이 우리를 탈출해서 한바탕 소동을 일으킨다. 마쉬는 평소에도 플랙을 곱게 보지 않았는데 가족들이 키우는 야채를 뜯어먹고 엘리의 생일 케이크까지 망쳐버리자 결국은 총으로 쏴 죽인다. 엘리와 가족들의 원망어린 눈빛에 밀조한 술에 잔뜩 취한 마쉬는 마을로 내려가서 주정을 부리다 보안관의 추적을 받는데... A young girl is sent to live with Amish relatives in post-war Pennsylvania, where her life dramatically changes.

A family of children decide not to tell anyone their father has died, and to live on their own in the backwoods of rural North Carolina. If the state finds out they are on their own, they will be split up and sent to live in foster homes.

The Morgans, a loving and strong family of Black sharecroppers in Louisiana in 1933, face a serious family crisis when the husband and father, Nathan Lee Morgan, is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp. After some weeks or months, the wife and mother, Rebecca Morgan, sends the oldest son, who is about 11 years old, to visit his father at the camp. The trip becomes something of an odyssey for the boy. During the journey he stays a little while with a dedicated Black schoolteacher.

Though Karana is able to domesticate a wolf, her brother is not so fortunate with the animals and is killed by a pack of wild dogs. She is left to survive against the odds.

Every year the Chincoteague fire department rounds up the wild ponies of Assateague Island and holds an auction to thin out the herd. The young children set out to raise enough money in hopes that the Phantom will be caught in this years round up. They soon realize they will get more than they bargained for when the Phantom has a surprise for everyone: a foal named Misty.
