루이 13세 시대의 프랑스, 리슐리외 추기경(크리스토퍼 로그)은 자신의 통제권 밖에 있는 도시를 장악하기 위해 음모를 꾸민다. 추기경과 그 추종자들이 권력 장악을 위해서는 그랑디에 신부(올리버 리드)를 제거해야 한다. 그랑디에 신부는 요새화된 도시를 운영하는 성직자로 리슐리외 추기경이 프랑스 전체를 장악하는 데 방해가 됐던 것이다. 이에 리슐리외는 권력가이자 호색한인 그랑디에 신부를 고발하기로 하고, 그랑디에 신부에게 성적으로 집착하는 잔느 수녀(바네사 레드그레이브)를 그 음모에 끌어들인다. 악마에 홀려 있는 그 수녀는 그랑디에 신부에 대한 성적인 강박관념에 사로잡힌 인물이다. 악마로 고발당한 그랑디에의 재판이 진행되면서 수녀원은 점차 폭력과 광기로 물들어간다. 광적인 마녀 사냥이 점점 극단적으로 변해 가고 인간의 악마적인 본성이 적나라하게 드러나게 된다.
