영국에서 목사의 아들로 태어난 오스카는 또래의 아이들과 놀지 못한채 엄격한 가정교육을 받으며 살고 있었다. 그는 항상 아버지에게서 벗어나고 싶은 욕망을 품고 있었다. 아버지는 오스카에도 목사의 길을 걷게 하려는 생각을 하고 있었다. 아버지와 아들 오스카는 서로 다른 목적을 지니고, 오스카는 휴 스트라턴(Hugh Stratton: 톰 윌킨스 분)사제에게 보내진다. 그 후 성인이 된 오스카(Oscar Hopkins: 랄프 파인즈 분)는 옥스퍼드에서 사제가 되기 위해 교육을 받는다. 그러나 도박에 재미를 느끼기 시작한 오스카는 몰래 도박을 시작하고, 딴 돈으로 가난한 사람들을 돕는다. 호주의 한 농가에서 자라나 평범한 결혼 생활을 하던 루신다(Lucinda Leplastrier: 케이트 블랑쉬 분)는 새로운 꿈을 쫓아 시드니로 온다. 사회의 규범 따위에는 아랑곳 하지 않는 그녀는 유리 제품 공장을 경영하는 사업가로 변신한다. 그러나 남성위주의 사회에서 남성들의 편견에 답답해하던 그녀는 카드 게임에 재미를 붙이고, 그 속에서 동등한 대우를 받으며 위로 받는다. 공장에 필요한 새로운 기계를 찾아 런던에 들렀다 호주로 돌아가던 루신다는 배에서 우연히 전도 활동을 위해 호주로 가던 오스카를 만난다. 배안에서 지루한 시간을 보내던 루신다는 오스카가 카드에 뛰어난 감각을 지닌 것을 알고 카드 게임을 제안하는데...

Jack Dickens and his niece Sally run the family farm to support brother-in-law Alexander as a (supposedly brilliant) literary critic in London. Action begins when Alexander returns with his beautiful young wife Deborah, revealing himself as an arrogant failure and wanting to sell the farm out from under Jack. Blakemore introduces themes about Australia's separation from England, as well as expanding the pacifist and ecological philosophies espoused by the local Doctor Max Askey.
