세가와 우시마츠(마미야 쇼타로)는 자신이 피차별 부락 출신이라는 사실을 숨기고, 고향을 떠나 한 초등학교의 교사로 근무한다. 그는 돌아가신 아버지에게 그 출신을 숨기라는의 강력한 훈계를 받았다. 그는 학생들의 사랑을 받는 좋은 교사였지만, 태생을 숨기는 것에 대해 고민하고 차별 현상을 체험함으로써 심란해 하며 하숙집 무사 집안 출신의 여성 시호(이시이 안나)와의 사랑에 애를 태웠다. 친구인 동료 교사·긴노스케(야모토 유마)의 지지는 있었지만, 학교에서는 우시마츠의 태생에 대한 의심이 들기 시작하고, 우시마츠의 입장은 위태로워진다. 괴로워하던 중 우시마츠는, 피차별 부락 출신 사상가 이노코 렌타로(마시마 히데카즈)에게 심취되어 간다.이노코 앞으로 편지를 썼더니 뜻밖에 이노코와 대면할 기회를 얻게 되지만 우시마츠는 이노코에게 조차 자신의 출신을 밝힐 수 없었다. 그러던 중 이노코의 연설회가 열린다. 우시마츠는 인간은 모두 존엄하다는 이노코의 말에 강한 감동을 느끼지만, 이노코는 연설 후 정적이 찌른 칼에 목숨을 잃는다. 이 사건이 계기가 되어 우시마츠는 어떤 결의를 마음에 품고 제자들이 기다리는 마지막 교단에 서려 한다.

Chiyo, a 59 year old mother of 4, had lost her husband seven years ago. She will soon lose her home so she is offered by her eldest son, Ryoichi to live with him and his family. But her children are disappointed to hear that Chiyo has decided to become a live-in housekeeper. Then her eldest daughter Setsuko announced that Chiyo has had an offer of marriage. It is from the widower Kurosaki who had been a friend to Chiyo's deceased husband. Kurosaki runs a small company and has no children but has enough life savings. However, second daughter Tomoe, and youngest child, Yoko, are opposed to it. The siblings begin to argue. Meanwhile, Kurosaki tells his sister Namiko that he has decided to remarry. She is furious because he refuses to tell her anything about Chiyo. Thus, she takes it upon herself to find out about Chiyo and soon has a confrontation with her. Around that time, Kurosaki’s company is about to go bankrupt...

Japanese film icon Ken Takakura, who has starred in over 100 films, stars in this elegiac look at war and remembrance. Hideji Yamaoka (Takakura) was a suicide pilot during the war who somehow survived Japan's surrender. This story is based on the novel "Jo no mai" by Tomiko Miyao which is based on the life of painter Shōen Uemura (1875–1949), the first woman to be awarded the Order of Culture. The title refers to the masterpiece bijinga ("picture of a beautiful woman") that Uemura painted at the age of 61. The main character, Tsuya Shimamura, is born in Kyoto as the second daughter of a tea trader who dies before her birth. Tsuya, who loves painting more than anything and is hopeless at housework, attends art school and at age 15 receives the name Shōsui (from the characters for "pine" and "green") from her teacher. The crown prince of England purchases one of her works, propelling her to fame overnight. The novel portrays the remainder of her stormy life, during which she is impregnated by her teacher and raises a fatherless child; through it all she devotes herself to her painting, undaunted.

해질녘의 도쿄(東京) 세타가야구(世田谷区) 제3케이힌(第三京浜) 고속도로상에서 하얀 무스탕으로부터 새끼고양이와 젊은 여자가 내팽개쳐지고 뒤에서 오던 오토바이를 탄 소년에게 구조를 받는다.
