주인공 벤은 어떤 대학교 고고학 전공인 학생이다. 어느 날, 죽은 아버지의 변호사가 찾아와선 아버지가 남긴 유산 중 새로운 것이 발견되었다면서 나무로 된 상자 형태의 기계 장치를 전해주고 간다. 작동법 및 이 물건에 대한 어떤 것도 모른 가운데, 이걸 사진으로 찍어서 교수에게 물어본다. 교수는 대략적으론 알겠지만 정확한건 모르겠다며, 전문가를 통해 알아보고 알려주겠다고 한다.
