세리(Sherry Ouelette: 바네사 파이크 분)는 악덕 고용주인 삼촌 빌리(Bill Gartley: 로버트 잉글랜드 분)가 운영하는 블루 리본 세탁공장에서 일을 하는데 어느날 세리는 운반 중이던 아이스박스에 부딪치는 바람에 대형 다리미에 손이 끼여 상처를 입는다. 그후 같이 일하던 프넬리 아줌마(Mrs. Frawley: 베라 블랙커 분)가 다리미 속으로 빨려 들어가 압사를 하는 사건이 연이어 일어나는데 이 사건을 조사하기 위해 형사 존(John Hunton: 테드 레빈 분)이 찾아온다. 그러나 존은 프렐리 아줌마의 시체를 보자 너무 끔직해 놀라고, 약을 먹고서야 간신히 진정을 한 그는 친구인 마크 잭슨(Mark Jackson: 다니엘 매트모 분)에게 가서 위로를 받는다. 그 다음날 또다시 세탁 공장에선 파이프가 터지면서 증기가 새어나와 여자 세명이 다치는 사건이 발생한다. 조사차 병윈으로 온 존은 이 모든 일이 세리가 다치면서 시작됐다는 말을 듣게 되고, 친구인 마크로부터 그 기계에 악마가 들어 있으며 처녀의 피를 통해 힘을 발휘한다는 말을 듣는다. 이 말을 들은 존은 애써 그의 말을 무시하려 하지만 또 다시 꼬마가 아이스박스에서 압사하는 사건이 생긴 후 아이스박스에서 묻어나온 핏자국이 세리의 것임이 밝혀지자 마크의 말에 동감하게 되고 망치로 아이스 박스를 내려친다.
