현대 중국사회에서 13세 소녀가 겪는 혹독한 성장기에 관한 영화. 리완은 자신이 하고싶은 것보다는 부모가 강요하는 삶을 강요받고 있다. 유일하게 자신을 졸졸 따르는 강아지에게 아인쉬타인이라는 이름을 붙이고 정성껏 돌보지만, 할아버지가 장을 보러 갔다 오는 길에 잃어버린다. 개를 찾는 일에 관심이 없는 가족이 원망스러워 반항하려 하지만 돌아오는 것은 냉정한 가족의 반응 뿐이다. 어른들의 세계에서 개고기를 먹어보기도 하고, 어른들의 뜻에 따라 성적을 올리고, 어른들을 기쁘게 할 최우수상을 받아오지만 그녀는 행복하지 않다. 만 두살이 되어서야 알게된 남동생의 존재는 그녀를 더욱 혼란스럽게도 하지만 새로운 깨달음을 얻게 된다. ‘호랑이 엄마’로 알려진 엄격한 극동의 교육방식은 진정한 애정이 바탕이 되지 않고서는 그저 최소한의 노력으로 빠르고 효율적인 우수생을 길러내려는 방식일 뿐이다. 여느 청소년들이 다 그렇 듯 결국 성장통은 스스로 이겨내는 수 밖에 없지만, 스스로의 잘못에 대해 사과하지 않는 어른들로 둘러쌓인 세계에서는 더욱 더 큰 희생이 요구된다.
