세계 2차 대전 당시 대기업에서 종사하고 있는 카지는 군대에 집영되는 대신 광산에 가서 군대에 납품할 광물들을 생산하는 광산의 간부로 발탁된다. 군대 입대 때문에 하지 않으려고 했던 결혼을 하고 부인인 미치코와 함께 광산으로 간다. 양심으로 똘똘 뭉친 카지는 그곳에서 일본인에게 당하는 중국 노동자들의 생활개선과 동시에 포로로 잡혀온 중국 노동자들의 인간적인 생활을 찾아주기 위해 노력하지만 일본군과 광산의 다른 간부들과의 갈등으로 이어지고 결국 일본군에 눈 밖에 나서 군대에 입영되게 된다.

동양 플라워즈의 스카우트맨 기시모토는 대학 야구의 강타자 쿠리타를 입단 시키도록 명령을 받았으나, 쿠리타에게는 그를 대학까지 보내며 키워준 다마키라고 하는 정체를 알 수 없는 남자가 함께 있고, 쿠리타는 다마키 애인의 여동생인 후에코와 사랑하는 사이다. 쿠리타를 얻기 위해 각 구단의 스카우트맨들이 분주한 속에 다마키는 쿠리타의 몸값과 함께 자신의 보수도 올리려고 결론을 나중으로 미룬다. 결국은 쿠리타가 귀성한 본가까지 스카우트맨이 들이닥쳐 욕심에 눈이 먼 가족들이 매수되어 형제간에 칼부림까지 일어나게 된다. 결국 쿠리타는 병상에 있는 다마키를 무시하고 오사카 삭스에 입단. 후에코와도 절연, 다마키는 죽게 된다. 너무나 추악한 싸움과 다마키의 몰인정함에 혐오감이 들었던 기시모토 였으나 다마키를 압도할 만한 포수를 찾는데 새로운 의욕을 불태우게 된다.

소와 말들이 뛰노는 평화롭고 한적한 산골 마을. 어릴 적 가출을 한 뒤 도쿄에서 스트립퍼로 일하고 있는 카르멘이란 예명의 오킨이 자칭 금의환향을 하겠다는 편지를 보내왔다. 오킨은 자신의 직업을 '정말로' 예술이라고 믿고 있는, 머리가 약간 모자라는 여자다. 오킨의 언니는 그 편지를 들고 가서 아버지께 보이며 오킨의 금의환향(?)을 허락해 줄 것을 부탁하지만 아버지의 반응은 냉담하다. 결국 남편과 상의를 한 끝에, '일본은 문화국가'임을, 그래서 응당 예술가는 어떤 일이 있어도 대우해 주어야 한다고 굳게 믿고 있는 교장 선생에게 아버지를 설득시켜 줄 것을 부탁한다. 우여곡절 끝에 귀향을 허락 받은 오킨. 산골 마을에서는 꿈도 꾸지 못할 파격적인 모습으로 금의환향을 하게 되고, 그런 오킨과 그 동료 마야의 모습은 순박한 산골 마을 사람에게 일대 파문을 일으키며 갖가지 해프닝이 벌이지게 된다. 한편, 돈이 되는 일이라면 물불을 가리지 않는 탐욕스러운 사업가인 마르쥬는 마을 사람들을 상대로 한 오킨의 스트립쇼를 계획하게 되는데...

장님 안마사인 도쿠와 후쿠는 산중 휴양지에 일하러 가는 길이다. 두 사람은 소리만으로 몇 명의 아이들이 지나가는지 맞춰 보기도 하며 고갯길을 오른다. 때마침 두 사람 곁을 마차가 지나가고, 도쿠는 도쿄 여인의 향기가 났다며 미소 짓는다. 곧바로 일을 시작한 도쿠는 어떤 여인을 안마하게 되는데, 그는 낮에 맡았던 도쿄 여인의 향기를 알아본다. 한편, 여관 손님의 돈이 없어지는 사건이 발생하고, 수수께끼 같은 도쿄 여인이 의심을 받게 된다. 시미즈는 상황의 역전을 통해 갈등과 유머를 이끌어냈다. 여전히 시미즈 특유의 스타일이 돋보이는데, 특히나 걸으면서 이야기하는 트래킹 숏, 인물의 옆모습을 찍으며 움직이는 실내 트래킹 숏 등 모두 다른 방식으로 활용한 그의 카메라워크는 거장의 솜씨를 보여준다. 그리고 앞이 보이지 않는 도쿠의 시선이 떠나는 여인을 끝까지 따라가는 듯한 마지막 장면은 단연 최고의 명장면이다.
