In 2008 she transfixed Ireland again when, ravaged by cancer, she turned to her friend and radio host Marian Finucane to talk frankly about her impending death. 'Nuala' is Finucane's journey of discovery into her friend's life as well as a raw and vivid testimony to the enduring power of friendship.

변호사인 닉(Nick: 우디 알렌 분)과 정신과 의사인 데보라(Deborah Fifer: 베트 미들러 분)는 남매를 두고 행복한 결혼 생활을 한다. 결혼 60주년을 맞이하여 파티를 계획한 두 사람은 준비를 위하여 쇼핑센터로 나간다. 데보라는 최근 행복한 결혼 생활에 대한 책을 펴낸 바 있으며 닉은 육십만 달러가 걸린 계약건을 성사시키기 위하여 노력 중에 있다. 쇼핑 센터에서 즐거운 시간을 보내던 중, 닉은 자신에게 7개월간 사귀어 온 여자가 있었음을 실토한다. 청천병력 같은 말에 데보라는 변호사를 정해서 이혼 수속을 하겠다고 한다. 직업이 변호사인 닉은 자신을 변호사로 쓰라고 자청해서 남편이 이혼 수속의 변호사가 된다. 한참 실랑이를 하던 두 사람은 극장 속에 들어가 얘기를 계속하다가 서로를 이해하며 다시 화해하기에 이른다. 그런데 이번에는 데보라가 자신도 또 다른 정신과 의사인 늙은 남자와 사귀고 있음을 고백한다. 화가 난 닉도 헤어지겠다며 뛰쳐나간다. 머리가 아파서 약을 사러 약국에 들어간 닉은 데보라가 바닥에 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견하고 간호해 준다. 한편 닉이 심혈을 기울이던 60만달러 계약 건이 성사가 되자 두 사람은 멋진 옷으로 갈아 입고 칵테일 바에서 축하를 나눈다. 옛날의 추억을 더듬던 두 사람은 사랑의 결실인 자식들에 대한 가슴 저며오는 사랑과 아직도 시라지지 않은 둘 간의 애정을 발견하게 된다. 화해 무드로 가던 중 자존심을 건드리는 말 몇마디 때문에 두사람은 다시 충돌하게 된다. 이 과정에서 닉은 쇼핑센터의 광대를 한 대 후려치게 된다. 이때 데보라는 재빨리 기지를 발휘해 닉을 자신의 환자라고 둘러대고 닉은 난처한 지경을 모면하는데...

존은 베트남에서 마이클의 도움으로 죽음의 위기를 넘긴 뒤 제대해서도 그와 돈독한 우정을 유지한다. 두사람은 함께 고기 포장공장에서 일하는데 어느 날 강도가 들어와 존을 죽이려 하자 마이클이 위기를 넘기고 존을 구한다. 두 번이나 마이클의 도움으로 목숨을 건진 존. 하지만 강도들은 앙갚음을 하기 위해 마이클을 폭행하고, 마이클은 식물인간이 되고 만다. 존은 마이클의 복수를 위해 익스터미네이터 (처벌자)가 된다. 계속되는 그의 복수극으로 강력계 형사 도튼이 수사에 나선다. 하지만 선거철을 맞은 정치권은 강력사건으로 여당에 대한 신뢰도가 떨어지자 CIA를 통해 존을 해치울 계획을 세운다. 도튼은 수사 끝에 존의 신변과 행방을 파악하고, 그 사실을 안 존은 도튼과 단둘이 만나 자수할 것을 재판을 통해 세상이 시끄러워지는 것을 원하지 않는 정치권은 존과 도튼을 모두 조용히 죽이려 하는데...
