Umiemon is a naniwa-bushi singer who travels with his wife to the United States in hopes of achieving fame and fortune.

Ayame, a courtesan, attracts the attention of street vendor Kisuke and decides to run away with him to America. Unfortunately, a crazed tattoo artist is obsessed with Ayame's perfect skin as a potential canvas, so he kills Kisuke to keep Ayame in Japan. Later, Ayame is sold to a brothel in Yokohama. Kisuke's ghost possesses her, causing his image to appear tattoo-like on her skin whenever she has sex.

Loosely based on a 1926 short story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, the film opens as an artist and a young woman are in a dentist's waiting room. Though he is attracted to the woman, he says nothing to her. They are later in the same examining room. When he is given an anesthetic, he begins to imagine a series of scenes in which the woman undergoes various forms of sexual abuse, including rape and torture. When the artist recovers from the anesthetic, he finds clues showing that he may not have been hallucinating.

Jun has come to Tokyo from his family home, an island which resembles a ship. He works in a machine shop and is attempting to develop a career as a cartoonist in his spare time. When he travels around the town by subway, he has grown into the habit of groping female passengers in a sexual way. They never denounce him, and many seem to respond very favorably, moaning in apparent ecstasy. However, when his girlfriend sees him doing this, she denounces him to the police. The woman he was groping at the time refuses to press charges; indeed, she says that what was happening was nobody's business. Still, Jun's girlfriend leaves him. He goes to his father's grave to pay his respects, but somehow cannot find it. On his way back, he sees a number of men molesting a woman and does nothing to stop them. Eventually his girlfriend comes back to him, and his indulgence in train-groping tapers off.

세 명의 시골 고등학교 학생들이 대입고사를 위해 도쿄로 향한다. 시험장에서 그들은 주위에 앉은 여학생들을 보며 성적 환상에 빠져든다. 세 소년은 외설적인 노래를 부르며 자신들의 절망과 ‘부모들의 이상주의’에 대해 냉소적인 태도를 표현한다. 하지만 노래의 반항적인 힘은 한국계 일본인 여대생이 부르는 종군 위안부의 만가를 듣는 순간 사라져 버린다. 시험의 마지막 시간에 일본 민족이 한국에서 유래했다는 강의를 들으며, 그들은 환상의 대상이었던 소녀를 목졸라 죽이는 상상을 한다. 꿈과 현실 그리고 의식의 흐름에 따른 독백이 교차되는 는 정해진 시나리오 없이 촬영을 진행하면서 작가와 배우들이 함께 만들어 간다. 주인공 이치로 아라키는 사랑의 도주와 결혼, 그리고 이마이 타다시가 연출한 TV 드라마 촬영 도중 뛰쳐나온 일화로 유명한 가수이기도 하다. 신슈의 농촌, 빈농의 딸 시노는 여교사인 마츠코, 촌장의 아들인 겐지, 가난한 청년 에이스케와 함께 이상적인 농촌공동체를 꿈꾸며 공동사육을 한다. 그러나 홍수로 인해 사육장은 날아가고, 겐지가 마을 임원이 됨으로써 공동체는 무너진다. 시노는 겐지와 동반자살을 시도하지만 혼자만 살아남게 되고, 실신 상태의 시노를 강간한 에이스케는 이후 '백주의 살인마'가 된다. 신문에 실린 연쇄살인사건에서 영감을 받아 다케다 다이준의 원작을 각색한 작품으로, 2천 컷에 이르는 쇼트를 통해 피사체를 여러 각도에서 분할하는 실험적 편집기법으로도 유명한 걸작. A corrupt businessman blackmails the lovelorn reprobate Atsushi into watching over his suitcase full of embezzled cash while he serves a jail sentence.
