Legendary England cricketer Sam Palmer (Jack Warner) is due to bat in his final test match against Australia. He is desperate for his son Reggie (Ray Jackson) to see his final innings. But Reggie prefers poetry to cricket and when he is offered the opportunity to read his poetry to England's greatest playwright Alexander Whitehead (Robert Morley) on the last day of the test, the relationship between father and son is tested to the limit. As Sam prepares for his final knock, the conflict with his son weighs heavily on his mind, but he is also upset over England's young batsman and ladies-man, Syd Thompson (George Relph), dating the woman whom he hopes to marry.

The father of a girl in an orphanage, who doesn't remember him, has been writing to her with tales of his success in business. Actually, he is impersonating a friend, a handsome gambler. When the father dies, the gambler takes the girl from the orphanage and tells her the truth. But the girl is now a full-grown beauty and complications arise, including those provided by a black-sheep brother.

보어 전쟁에서 귀향한 젊은 영국인 장교 클라이브 캔디(Clive Candy: 로저 리베세이 분)는 독일에서 영국인들에 대한 헛소문이 퍼져 있다는 이야기를 전해 듣고 진실을 알리기 위해 독일로 떠난다. 베를린에서 이야기의 제공자인 영국인 가정교사 이디스(Edith Hunter/Barbara Wynne/Johnny Cannon: 데보라 커 분)를 만나 소문을 퍼뜨리고 다니는 커니츠를 찾아간 캔디, 그곳에서 커니츠의 동료들을 화나게 해 결투 신청을 받는다. 결투를 해서 부상을 입게 된 캔디, 입원한 병원에서 결투의 상대였던 독일인 장교 테오(Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: 안톤 월브룩 분)를 만나 향후 40년이 넘을 우정을 쌓게 된다. 테오와의 인연은 거기서 끝나지 않고 캔디를 병문안 하던 이디스가 테오와 사랑에 빠져 두 사람이 결혼하기까지 이른다. 두 사람의 결혼을 축복해주고 영국으로 돌아온 캔디, 자신이 이디스를 사랑했었다는 걸 깨닫지만 때는 이미 늦었다. 이후 캔디는 군 생활을 계속하며 간호사 바바라(Barbara Wynne: 데보라 커 분)와 결혼한다. 하지만 바바라는 몇 년 후에 죽고 그는 다시 2차 세계 대전에 참전한다. 이 전쟁 동안 캔디는 나치의 행각을 보게 되고 테오와의 인연은 계속 이어진다. 은퇴를 앞두고 영국에 정착하기 위해 영국으로 돌아온 테오와 다시 만나는 캔디, 은퇴를 앞두고 명예와 의리에 대해 주절거리며 나치처럼 싸우기보다는 전쟁에서 패배하겠다는 말을 한다.
