히말라야에서 거대한 원숭이 인간의 발자국이 발견되고, 사람들은 괴물을 생포해 홍콩으로 데려옴으로써 엄청난 돈을 벌려는 계획을 세운다. 동생에게 연인을 빼앗기고 실의에 젖어 있던 조니는 자포자기한 심정으로 이 탐험에 동참한다. 일련의 끔찍한 재난 끝에 원숭이 인간에게서 키워진 아름다운 소녀 아웨이를 만난 조니는 그녀와 사랑에 빠지고, 원숭이 인간은 아웨이의 설득으로 홍콩으로 향하지만, 곧 탈출해 시내를 쑥대밭으로 만들기 시작한다. 과 , 을 합쳐놓은 듯한, 장르영화의 색채가 짙은 작품. 쇼 브라더스의 마지막 스팩터클 시대에 속하는 은 종잡을 수 없는 오락활극이다. 1933년 RKO에서 만든 할리우드 '괴수' 스펙터클 영화의 고전 을 원본으로 하여 일본 도호 영화사는 일련의 '고지라' 시리즈를 만들었고, 빅 사이즈 스펙터클의 오락활극은 쇼 브라더스에 의해서 홍콩에서 으로 둔갑하였다. 물론 이야기 자체는 을 원본으로 하지만, 쇼 브라더스는 놀랍게도 여기에 '성성왕'의 마돈나로 금발 백인 '여자 타잔'을 등장시킨다. 그래서 과 의 이야기를 기기묘묘하게 믹스시킨 이 영화는 블루 스크린 아날로그 특수효과를 '촌스럽게' 동원하여 보는 사람을 한껏 즐겁게 만든다. 영화 전반부는 밀림에 가서 '성성왕'과 '백인여자 타잔'을 만나는 모험활극과 로맨스로 펼쳐지며, 후반부는 홍콩에 킹콩을 데려와서 벌어지는 괴수영화로 세트장을 '쑥밭'으로 만든다. 일본 '고지라' 스태프를 초대하여 만든 홍콩 도시와 빌딩의 재연은 정교하지는 않지만, 놀라운 것은 킹콩이 철창 우리를 탈출하여 홍콩 거리에서 난동을 부리는 장면이 무려 30분 동안 (이 영화의 3분의 1!) 이어진다. 처음에는 미소를 지으면서 볼 수 있지만, 그러나 보는 사람을 지치게 만들 만큼 이어지는 황폐한 홍콩 세트장의 폐허가 되어가는 모습을 홍콩이라는 현대 도시에 대한 고전적인 쇼 브라더스 스튜디오의 혐오감과 절망적인 비젼으로 보인다. 그것을 반증하듯이

Danny Lee is Hsu Chih-yuan, the youngest son of strict patriarch Hsu Hui-tang (Cheng Miu). A pacifist village is beset by bandits in this martial arts thriller. "Savage Five" hands-down rivals the ornateness of "Kid With The Golden Arm" and the twist-heavy "Five Deadly Venoms". The always great David Chiang plays a lesser version of his Rover character from "Duel Of The Iron Fist", and Ti Lung, looking incredible here, is at his physical best. Accolades to Chen Kuan Tai and Wang Chung in great sympathetic roles, too. A kung fu classic where the actual martial arts display takes a back seat to the mesmerizing story.

중국 고전문학 '금병매(金甁梅)'를 바탕으로 한 영화. 돈과 권력을 지닌 서문경은 어느날 길에서 우연히 마주친 반금련에 반한다. 반금련이 영웅호걸 무송의 형인 무대랑의 부인인 것을 알고 고심하던 서문경은 반금련의 이웃인 왕 노파와 짜고 반금련을 유혹하여 결국 정을 통하게 된다. 하지만 나중에 무대랑에게 들키게 되자 무대랑의 형 무송이 돌아와 이 사실을 알게 되어 자신들에게 큰일이 생길 것을 두려워한 서문경과 반금련은 무대랑을 독살하고, 두 사람은 결혼한다. 반금련을 첩으로 들인 서문경은 친구 화자허의 부인 이병아와도 눈이 맞아 정을 통하다가 음모를 꾸며 화자허의 재산까지 빼앗는다. 빈털터리가 된 화자허는 병으로 죽고, 서문경은 이병아도 첩으로 삼는다. 그렇게 음탕한 생활을 계속하던 서문경은 반금련과 잠자리를 갖던 중에 죽고만다.

무술대회장에서 상인들의 판권을 놓고 싸우던 평백은 스기하라를 죽이지만 그 역시 죽고만다. 그후 평백의 아들 철은 비적생활을 하던 중 고향으로 돌아오나 어릴때 그를 좋아하던 봉순은 대웅과 결혼을 한 후였다. 한편 스기하라의 아들 곡강은 판권을 움켜쥐고 상인들의 고혈을 빨고 있던 중 무술대회에서 대웅을 죽인다. 대웅을 돕고자 나왔던 철마저 잡히는 신세가 되자, 봉순은 곡강에게 철의 석방을 요구하고 곡강에게 몸을 허락하는 조건을 세운다. 철이 석방이 되고 곡강이 봉순을 탐하려 하자 봉순이 그를 죽이려 하지만 되려 죽게 그녀가 죽는다. 석방된 철은 무술을 연마하여 무술시합에서 곡강을 죽인다.
한국의 장일호 감독이 홍콩 가서 만든 영화. 한국 배우가 많이 나온다. 국문과 출신인 장일호 감독은 1953년 극단 신협에서 활동했으며 56년, 신필름에 있으면서 신상옥 감독 밑에서 연출수업을 받았다. 그의 감독 데뷔작은 1961년 작인 이다. 70년대 초반엔 홍콩으로 건너가 쇼브라더스에서 활동한 적도 있으며, 액션, 멜로, 공포, 시대극 등 장르를 가리지 않고 수많은 영화들을 만들었다. 80년대 만든 멜로 시리즈 이후로 감독 활동을 쉬고 있다.

Chen Hou is a chauffeur who gets caught in a mistaken identity scandal linking him to businesswoman Lok Dai. Chen was supposed to audition for a job as her chauffeur, but a proposed musical show is far more attractive to the aspiring dancer. When a rumor gets out that the two are involved in an affair, she's angry and confronts him, but his charms overwhelm her, and it's revealed that she too desires to dance. Soon she's bankrolling the affair, the sets are being built, and the singing and dancing begin!
