TV 드라마로도 꾸준히 인기를 얻었던 요코야마 미츠테루(橫山光輝)의 을 바탕에 두고 영화화한 작품. 내용은 원작의 전일담(프리퀄)이라고 한다. 1545년. 때는 전란의 시기. 전국 다이묘(大名)들이 피로 피를 씻는 전쟁에 몰두하고 있을 무렵, 그들에게 고용된 닌자들 역시 매일매일 격렬한 사투를 벌여야만 했다. 카게(影) 일족으로 알려진 닌자 집단 역시 그 중의 하나. 그들은 대대로 "무적의 강철(無敵の鋼)"이라고 하는, 어떤 물질보다도 높은 강도를 자랑하는 금속으로 무기와 방어도구를 만들어 사용하는 한편 수많은 닌자술을 지니고 있었다. 그러나 시간이 지남에 따라 무적의 강철은 사라지고, 닌자술을 사용할 수 있는 사람도 점점 줄어 지금은 카게 일족의 정당한 후계자는 두령인 백영(白影, 다케나카 나오토) 밑에 적영(赤影, 안도 마사노부), 청영(靑影, 무라카미 준), 아스카(飛鳥, 아소 구미코)라는 세 명의 젊은 닌자만이 남아있을 뿐이다. 카게 일족은 전국 다이묘 토고(東鄕)에게 고용되어 전국통일을 위해 성실하게 모든 임무를 수행하고 있었다. 그러나 그 임무라는 것과 "빛나는 평화의 세계를 위해 그림자가 되어 일한다"는 카게 일족에게 대대로 내려오는 교훈과의 사이에 괴리가 있음을 느낀 적영을 비롯한 젊은 닌자들은 고민하기 시작한다. 그런 와중에 알 수 없는 어떤 위험을 느끼면서도 쿄고쿠(京極)성에 잠입하는 적영 일행. 그 곳에서 적영 일행은 자신을 기다리고 있던 다른 닌자들과 목숨을 건 사투를 시작하는데.

고요하고 평화로운 일본열도, 어느 날 원인 모를 대규모의 폭발이 산발적으로 발생한다. 국민들은 이 원인 모를 폭발에 불안과 공포를 느끼기 시작하고 일본열도는 금세 전쟁터를 방불케하는 혼란으로 휩싸인다. 이에 일본 항공 자위대는 비상소집을 갖고 대책회의를 세우고 폭발사건의 원인 규명에 나선다. 결국 사건의 주범이 일본 내에 주둔중인 미군기지의 미사일이었다는 것을 밝혀낸 자위대는 또한, 미군기지의 미사일 시스템은 '녹색 원숭이'라 불리우는 정체불명의 테러집단의 단원에 의해 조종되었다는 사실까지 알게 된다. 발사 시스템을 조작하여 미사일을 날려보낸 '녹색원숭이' 단원은 체포되었지만 그는 결국 여러 가지 의문만 남겨놓은 채 "녹색원숭이가 세상을 지배한다"라는 말만 남기고 자살을 하고 만다. 사건은 다시 원점으로 돌아가고 이에 자위대는 사건 해결을 위해 '천리안'으로 불리우는 외과의인 '유리 사치코'에게 사건을 의뢰한다. 앞으로 일어날 사건을 미리 볼 수 있는 능력과 사람의 마음을 모두 읽어내는 능력이 있는 그녀는 이전에도 '녹색원숭이'의 테러로부터 사람들을 구했던 경험이 있는 일본 국민들의 정신적인 지주로 자리잡고 있는 유명인이다. 또한 항공 자위대는 '유리'에게 도움을 줄 '미유키'라는 조종사를 선발하여 '유리'와 함께 사건의 해결에 총력을 다하게 한다. 대학 시절 심리학을 전공한 '미유키'는 점점 '유리'의 불가사의한 능력에 감탄하며 그녀를 존경하게 되고...

More than his indie debut Skinless Night, this was the film that launched Mochizuki on his distinctive trajectory through the crime and yakuza genres. Matsuzaki (Eiji Okuda) is a racing tipster for a sports paper, a lowlife who spends half his time drunk, hangs out with yakuza and other riff-raff and complicates his sex life by succumbing to advances from his girlfriend's sister. As played by Okuda, he's also a figure of considerable hangdog charm. Less a plot-based movie than a guide to the several forms of high stakes gambling in Japan, this centres on his attempt to help a friend swindled in a bent mahjong game. Hakuryu appears (memorably) as an inscrutable yakuza in a black leather jacket. The film's success led to two sequels.

The widow of a murdered yakuza boss serves jail time for attacking the man she believes killed her husband. After her release, as she is shadowed by a hitman, she returns to thoughts of revenge.

The story of beautiful Christian nun, Kyoko who is the object of affection for two very different men - one the happy-go-lucky yakuza gangster, Haruhiko who is the next-in-line to takeover the ragtag "Tenryu Gumi" gang and the other bumbling police detective Kumashiro. The Tenryu Gumi is a collection of misfits and other troublemakers but are relatively peaceful due to their Christian beliefs. Their bitter rivals are the more traditional "Kuroiwa Gumi", a much more sadistic and violent group led by godfather Kuroiwa.

The culturally isolated, nomadic Seburi people of western Japan are the subject of this tragedy about a few of the community's members who especially experience difficulties as modern Japan encroaches on their world. The setting is World War II, and conflicts have already arisen when the military police come to take Seburi men away into the army. Still following their own customs that can be harsh at times, and are particularly cruel to women (women must give birth alone and unaided, a woman's adultery is punished by burying her up to her neck in the earth and then leaving her for days), the Seburi are mainly treated with fear and animosity by the non-Seburi townspeople of the region. Along with the hardships arising from cultural clashes, nature's own vagaries present other challenges to the Seburi -- who still lived in tents until the 1950s. Winter avalanches and snowstorms cause as much havoc as the tensions engendered by the slow encroachment of the modern world.
