스파이크 리는 연쇄살인극을 뒤쫓는 추리극 대신 그 공포가 불러일으키는 집단 히스테리를 분석하는 작업을 택했다. 사건이 발생한 뉴욕 브롱크스에 사는 헤어드레서 비니는 아내 디오나를 속이고 사촌처제와 야간 데이트를 하다가 '샘의 아들'의 범죄현장을 목격한다. 비니는 살인범이 '목격자'인 자신을 공격할지 모른다고 두려워하고, 단서를 잡지 못한 경찰은 마피아를 찾아가 범인 검거를 도와달라고 부탁한다. 정의의 수호자가 되어버린 마피아가 내건 상금에 고무돼 비니의 동네 건달친구들은 수상한 사람들을 사냥하기 시작하고, 펑크족 차림으로 따돌림당하던 친구 리치를 최종 사냥감으로 지목한다. 양성애자에 포르노 영화를 찍었다는 것이 혐의의 전부다.

폭스는 엑스의 여자 샌디에게 히로시 박사를 유혹해 줄 것을 요청한다. 히로시는 마스 기업의 촉망받는 과학자로, 호사카 기업에서 그를 간절히 원하고 있는 것. 폭스는 호사카 측에 1억 달러를 주면 원하는 장소에 히로시를 배달하겠다고 말하고, 그에게 샌디를 붙여주며 본인은 사랑에 빠지지 말고 히로시가 자신을 사랑하게 만들라고 한다. 폭스의 계획대로 일이 진행되어 히로시가 샌디를 믿게 되자, 폭스는 히로시의 납치를 실행하려고 한다. 그러나 누군가 퍼뜨린 감기 치료제의 DNA를 조작한 바이러스로 인하여 히로시를 비롯한 호사카의 과학자들은 갑자기 죽음을 맞게 된다. 계획이 틀어진 폭스와 엑스는 뒤늦게야 샌디가 마스의 지시를 받고 일해왔으며, 엑스 자신이 히로시와 같은 신세였음을 알게 된다. 샌디는 처음부터 엑스와 사랑에 빠지지 않았으면서 엑스가 자신을 사랑하게 만들었다는 사실을 깨닫은 폭스는 임무의 실패로 위험에 빠지자 자살을 택하고 엑스는 샌디를 그리며 괴로워 하는데…
