한 커플이 우연히 만난 한 친절한 부자를 만나면서 벌여지는 일을 다루고 있는데, 제목처럼 낮선이의 호의는 영화가 마무리될 쯤에는 완전히 정반대의 역설적인 의미로 변해버리고 만다. 이안 맥이완은 한 때 카프카를 좋아한다고 했고, 물론 그의 영향을 받았다고 말하기도 했다. 그리고 이 작품이 바로 그런 작품 중의 하나로 그는 여기서 인간의 사도마조키즘적 성향에 대해 분석적으로 파해치면서 고발하는 식으로 다루기보다는 카프카의 작품에서 등장하듯이 그러한 것들을 겪는 피해자의 심리적 당혹감과 혼란스러움에 초점을 다루고 있다. 그래서 자세히 다루기보다는 오히려 미스테리하게 그러한 것들에 대해 정확히 알 수 없게 해서 불안 및 공포감 또는 충격을 강화시키고 있다.
