인도의 어느 시골 마을에 살고 있는 한 여대생은 남몰래 가수가 되고 싶은 꿈을 키워왔지만, 부르카로 온몸을 휘감고 다녀야 하는 문화적 관습으로 인해 정체성의 혼란을 느낀다. 다른 남자와 바람이 난 한 젊은 미용사는 숨막히게 좁은 동네를 떠날 생각만 하고 있다. 세 자녀를 둔 한 전업주부는 억압적인 가정생활을 떠나 진취적인 영업사원이 되고자 한다. 한편 한 55세 미망인은 폰섹스를 통해 다시 한번 성에 눈을 뜨게 된다. 보수적인 사회에 살고 있는 이 여성들은 소박한 자유를 찾아 이들을 둘러싸고 있는 관습이라는 틀을 깨부수기 시작한다.
