바비(Bobby Boucher: 아담 샌들러 분)는 서른 한 살의 노총각이다. 그의 어머니(Helen Boucher: 캐시 베이츠 분)의 표현을 빌면 바비는 사교성이 함량 미달이다. 남편으로부터 버림받은 아픔 때문에 어머니는 바비를 자신의 곁에 두고 소유하려 든다. 바비가 사귀는 여자친구 비키(Vicki Vallencourt: 페이루자 발크 분)마저도 악마라며 멀리하라고 강요한다. 학교 교육이라곤 받아본 적 없는 바비의 유일한 낙은 대학교 풋볼 팀 선수에게 1등급 수질 H2O를 공급하는 ‘워터보이’로 일하는 것이다. 풋볼팀의 선수들은 언제나 바비를 동네북 취급하지만 어느날 클라인 코치(Coach Klein: 헨리 윙클러 분)를 만나면서부터 그의 운명은 180도로 탈바꿈한다. 클라인은 아무도 거들떠 보지 않던 바비에게서 프로급 선수의 잠재력을 발견한다. 선천적으로 양순한 바비지만 태클을 걸어야 할 선수의 얼굴을 주시하면서 평소 가장 미웠던 사람의 얼굴을 떠올리면 갑자기 사나운 들소로 돌변해버리는 것이다. 이제 바비의 인기는 하늘을 찌를 듯 솟아오른다. 44연패의 늪에서 허덕이던 루이지애나 주립 대학은 바비의 눈부신 활약으로 급기야 대표팀 중 최강을 결정짓는 ‘버본 볼’ 챔피언쉽 결승전에 진출하게 된다. 그러나 고등학교 졸업장 없이 대학생으로 위장하여 부정선수로 뛰던 바비는 버본 볼의 결승전에 올라온 루이지애나 대학의 레드 코치(Red Beaulieu: 제리 리드 분)에 의해 비밀이 공개된다. 어머니로부터 학교 생활은 물론 일체의 사회활동을 금지당한 바비가 버본 볼 결승전에서 뛸 수 있는 방법은 없는 걸까? 마침내 버본 볼은 개막의 팡파레를 울리고 루이지애나 주립 대학팀의 영패가 눈앞에 닥칠 즈음 바비는 어머니에게 달려가 혁명적인 발언을 터뜨리게 되는데.

Not surprisingly, Chuck has made more than a few enemies, from outraged viewers trying to ban his show, to families of losing contestants looking for revenge. A hitman hired by one such family has shown up at Chuck's office, and he'll need to enlist the help of his most outspoken critic to keep from ending up like most of his contestants.
