잔꾀 많은 말썽꾸러기 소년 카셈은 축구를 너무나 좋아한다. 공부는 뒷전이고, 축구에 빠져 지내는 카셈은 엄마와 선생님께 혼나기 일쑤다. 그러던 카셈은 축구 경기를 직접 보기 위해 혼자서 240km 넘게 떨어진 테헤란까지 갈 계획을 세운다. 카셈은 가난한 살림을 꾸리는 엄마의 비상금을 훔친 것도 모자라 삼촌의 오래된 카메라로 아이들을 속여 돈을 받아 낸다. 과연 카셈은 테헤란에 가서 축구 경기를 볼 수 있을까? 2016년 영면한 거장 압바스 키아로스타미의 장편 데뷔작으로, 1970년대 이란의 모습을 진솔하게 담고 있다.

During the Iran-Iraq War, Bashu, a young boy loses his house and all his family. Scared, he sneaks into a truck that is leaving the area. He gets off the truck in the Northern part of the country, where everything from landscape to language is different. He meets Naii, who is trying to raise her two young children on a farm, while her husband is away. Despite cultural differences, and the fact that they do not speak the same language, Bashu and Naii slowly form a strong bond.

Noted Iranian actress Susan Taslimi plays an impoverished single mother who agees to marry off her 13-year-old daughter to a middle-aged man in return for a mare, which will help her earn an income and provide for her younger children. Director Ali Zhekan paints a stark picture of poverty and patriarchy in rural Iran (the mother stores her rice in a container hidden in a tree; her brother, who brokered the wedding, mercilessly beats the recalcitrant child), but this 1986 film is distinguished mostly by Taslimi's increasingly fiery performance as the mother decides to defend her daughter's freedom.

전쟁으로 집을 잃은 아미로는 버려진 배에서 혼자 사는 고아다. 아미로는 또래 아이들과 티격태격 싸움을 벌이며 바다 위에 둥둥 떠다니는 빈병을 하나라도 더 주워 팔려고 뛰어다니며, 구두를 닦고, 항구에서 냉수를 팔아 생계를 꾸려간다. 하지만 어린 아이라고 해서 사회가 만만한 것은 아니다. 구두를 닦다가 도둑으로 몰리기도 하고, 물을 마시고 자전거를 몰아 그대로 도망치는 어른을 끝까지 쫓아가서 돈을 받아내기도 하고, 얼음을 뺏으려고 쫓아오는 사람을 따돌려야 하는 일도 생긴다. 아미로는 친구들과 가장 즐기는 놀이 중 하나인 달리기에 점점 빠져가면서 자신감을 붙여간다. 아미로의 유일한 낙은 바닷가를 떠다니는 커다란 배와 비행기를 구경하는 것이다. 어렵게 모은 돈으로 항공기 관련 잡지를 사기도 하지만 정작 글은 읽을 줄 모르는 자신의 처지가 답답하기만 하다. 결국 다니던 학교에 다시 찾아가 글을 다시 배우며 목이 터져라 반복해서 글을 암송한다. 그리고 아이들과 함께 숨이 턱 끝까지 차오를 정도로 고통스러운 달리기 시합을 시작한다.
