종업식 날, 도쿄의 한 중학교 1학년 2반 남학생이 모두 사라졌다. 아이들은 빈 공장에 모여 어른 출입 금지 구역인 ‘해방구’를 만들어 공부와 규칙, 부모님과 선생님들의 잔소리에서 벗어나 아이들만의 자유로운 세상을 만든 것. 해방구를 없애려고 혈안이 되어 있는 어른들은 온갖 회유와 협박으로 공격하지만 아이들은 해방구 밖에 있는 여학생들과 협동 작전을 벌이고 기상천외한 아이디어로 어른들을 가볍게 물리친다. 과연 이들은 해방구를 끝까지 사수할 수 있을까?

영화는 러일전쟁이라는 시대적 사건을 배경으로, 그 안에서 살아가는 다양한 인간군상들의 고통과 애환을 그리고자 하였으며, 가상인물의 대표인 코가 타케시와 실존인물의 대표인 노기 마레스케를 통해 각각 병사들과 사령관의 입장에서 전쟁을 통해 그들의 심경과 고통, 애환과 변화, 사연을 그려낸 수작이다. 인간 드라마 못지 않게 전쟁영화로서의 스케일도 당시 일본 최대를 자랑하였으며, 뤼순 요새와 203고지를 재현하기 위해 이즈오오시마(伊豆大島)에 대규모 요새 세트장을 건설하고, 당시 사용된 총기와 군복, 공성전의 백미인 280mm유탄포를 정확하게 재현해냄으로써 밀리터리에서도 높은 평가를 받았다.

Samonji, a reporter, receives a message on his answering machine from his friend Takada that says "stop it... zero plan! February." Learning that Takada is dead, Samonji begins an investigation. Kawai Midori's father left the family a long time ago and since her mother passed away, she has taken care of her younger siblings by herself by working with a group of itinerant camellia oil peddlers. While she is In Izu selling camellia oil, she meets a young student, Katō Yutaka, who asks her to let him take her picture. The peddlers also meet a jazz band, and when Midori sings a song, teased by the band's star singer Nanjō Haruo, the band members are enraptured by her beautiful voice.
