한국전쟁 당시, 북한의 춘남리라는 작은 마을의 젊은 간호사가 전투 중 상처를 입고 남겨진 남한 병사를 구해준다. 전쟁의 불행한 상황 속에서 두 사람은 함께하면서 관계가 깊어진다. 북한 간호사에게 다시 돌아오겠다는 약속을 남기고 남한 병사가 떠나자 북한 간호사는 죽을 때까지 그를 기다린다. 그러나 남한 병사가 모든 것을 걸고 북한으로 돌아가려고 하지만 정치 상황상 이들의 재결합은 비극으로 치닫는다.
