태국 북부 치앙마이에서 살고 있는 쏜은 샨족이라는 종족, 미등록 이주민이라는 신분, 게이 업소 마사지사라는 직업 등 모든 사회적 위계에서 밑바닥에 자리한다. 어려운 상황 속에서도 여자친구와 미래를 꿈꾸며 일상을 살고 있는 쏜에게 경찰 간부 단골이 거부할 수 없는 제안을 한다.

한때 캄보디아 수도 프놈펜의 도시화와 근대화를 상징하던 화이트 빌딩. 세월이 흘러 건물은 낡고 사람들은 하나 둘 떠나간다. 철거와 이주를 앞두고 보상금 문제로 주민들 간 대립이 심화되는 상황. 영화는 힙합 댄서를 꿈꾸지만 녹록하지 않은 현실과 마주하는 청년 썸낭과 입주민을 대표하여 정부 측과 협상을 하지만 별다른 힘을 못 쓰는 그의 아버지를 중심으로 담담하게 진행된다. (제26회 부산국제영화제)

캄보디아 프놈펜의 상징적인 건축물인 화이트 빌딩은 철거될 상황에 놓인다. 철거 직전, 감독인 카빅 능은 자신의 가족을 포함해 세 가족의 모습에 주목한다. 철거민들이 짐을 싸고, 추억과 불안을 공유하며 건물이 완전히 허물어지기 전 이사를 나가는 일련의 과정이 카메라에 담긴다.

Over three million Cambodians died in the genocide between 1975 and 1979. The Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror also decimated a homegrown film industry that had flourished since 1960: movie theaters were bombed, film prints were destroyed and artists were executed. In Golden Slumbers, French-Cambodian filmmaker Davy Chou mourns this loss of lives and culture, but balances the somber material with a playfulness that honors the lush melodramas and mythic adventures of the glory years.
