반테러 작전요원 다니쉬(파르한 악타르)는 딸 누리와 함께 차를 타고 가던 중 수배된 테러리스트를 발견하고 뒤를 쫓는다. 하지만 잠복한 일당들이 공격을 가해오면서 누리가 목숨을 잃고 만다. 아내 루하나(에디티 라오 히다리)는 딸의 죽음을 남편의 책임으로 돌리고 그를 떠난다. 다니쉬는 동료에게 엿들은 정보를 통해 딸을 죽인 테러리스트를 찾아내어 죽이지만 그 테러리스트를 생포할 계획이었던 상부에서는 다니쉬에게 책임을 물어 병가를 내게 한다. 다니쉬는 딸의 무덤 앞에서 자살을 시도하려다 땅에 떨어진 지갑을 발견한다. 지갑의 주인은 휠체어를 타는 체스 마스터 판디트(아미타브 밧찬)다. 누리의 체스 스승이었던 그는 다니쉬에게도 체스를 가르치면서 우정을 쌓는다. 이후 다니쉬는 판디트의 딸 니나의 죽음이 복지부 장관 이자드와 관련이 있고 그 뒤에는 테러리스트들이 있음을 알게 된다. '와지르'라는 제목은 체스 게임에서 오와 열, 대각선으로 이동할 수 있어 가장 가치 있는 말로 간주되는 '퀸'을 뜻한다. 그리고 이 영화에 등장하는 암살자(닐 니틴 무케쉬)의 별명이기도 하다.
