무자비한 갱단인 던컨 일당은 한 평화로운 나바호족 인디언 마을을 습격해 사람들을 죽이고 한 여자의 머리 가죽을 벗겨 간다. 처참하게 죽은 아내를 발견한 남편 조는 던컨에게 복수하기 위해 일당을 쫓아간다. 한편 에스페란자 마을에 도착한 던컨은 마을의사 린과 공모해 거액을 운반하는 기차를 털기로 한다. 하지만 조가 선수를 쳐서 기차를 먼저 훔친 귀 마을로 가서 던컨 일당으로부터 마을을 지켜주는 대신 돈을 요구하지만 마을 사람들은 인디언과의 거래를 꺼리며 조의 제안을 거절한다. 오랜 노력 끝에 의사의 부인이 주민들을 설득하고 조에게 던컨 일당 퇴치를 부탁한다. 함정에 빠진 조는 던컨 일당에게 생포돼 고문을 당하지만 다행히 구출되고 던컨과의 최후의 결판을 짓게 된다. 숨 막히는 결투 끝에 조는 던컨이 훔쳐간 아내의 목걸이를 되찾고 던컨에게 피의 복수를 한다.
