세츠오 앞에 갑자기 처음 보는 젊은 며느리와 어린 손자가 나타났다. 도쿄로 떠나버린 아들은 불과 몇 달 전 심장마비로 급사했다 하고, 아들이 남기고 간 손자 슌야는 며느리 아키라와 피 한 방울 섞이지 않은 사이라고 한다. 아들을 잃은 황망함으로 슬퍼할 겨를도 없이, 십 수년간 홀로 지내온 세츠오는 어느새 새로운 가족과 함께 어우러지며 살아가는 것에 차차 익숙해지게 된다. 아키라는 아들을 자기 힘으로 당당하게 키우겠다며 슌야가 기차를 좋아한다는 이유로 철도기관사 시험을 보고 세츠오가 일하는 가고시마역에 취업한다. 사랑하는 이를 상실한 슬픔은 결코 사라지지 않는다. 그 고통을 안고 살아가는 것에 익숙해져야만 상처는 서서히 치유되고 흉터 위에는 새살이 돋아날 수 있다. 이 영화에서는 서로를 낯설어하는 세 사람이 독특한 형태의 가족으로 결합하며 진심 어린 관계를 형성하는 모습을 섬세한 터치로 표현한다. 으로 국내 관객들에게도 친숙한 쿠니무라 준이 세츠오 역을 맡아 연기의 폭과 깊이가 남다름을 확인시켜 준다. 어둠의 세계에서 벗어나 오랜만에 고향을 되찾은 고다 히로유키(츠마부키 사토시)는 옛 친구인 기타가와 고지(아사노 타다노부)의 도움으로 순조롭게 고향에 정착하게 된다. 하지만 기타가와에게는 숨겨놓은 의도가 있었으니 그것은 바로 오사카 시내 중심에 위치한 은행 지하에 보관중인 240억엔 상당의 금괴를 훔치는 것이다. 기타가와는 고다가 자신의 계획에 동참하기를 종용하고, 더 이상 삶의 가치를 느끼지 못하는 고다는 기타가와의 제안을 받아들인다.
