새학기를 맞는 희망으로 부푼 가을 캠퍼스. 자유로운 캘리포니아를 떠나 뉴잉글랜드의 명문 웰슬리에 새로운 미술사 교수로 오게 된 캐서린 왓슨(줄리아 로버츠) 역시 기대감에 들떠있지만, 보수적인 분위기에 젖어있는 학생들은 캐서린의 자유분방한 사고방식을 반길 마음은 털끝만큼도 없다. 미모와는 달리 냉정하기 짝이 없는 베티(커스틴 던스트), 똑똑함에서 둘째 가라면 서러울 조안(줄리아 스타일스), 프리섹스 물결에 빠진 지젤(매기 질렌홀), 자신이 연주하는 첼로의 아름다운 선율과는 달리 연애에는 쑥맥인 콘스탄스 역시 마찬가지. 하지만 결혼만이 여자 인생의 최고목표가 아니라는 캐서린의 자유롭고 진취적인 주장은 정물화 같던 그녀들에게 차츰 추상화의 생동감을 깃들게 하는데...

두 편의 연극을 실패한 극작가 데이빗 쉐인(존 큐잭)은 이번만은 엉터리 연출로 작품을 망칠 수 없다며 자신이 직접 연출까지 맡는다. 진지하고 무거운 주제로 브로드웨이 공연은 힘들 뿐 아니라 제작비마저 후원받기 어려운 처지에 닉(조 비커렐리)이라는 갱으로부터 그의 정부를 출연시킨다는 조건으로 제작비를 얻는다. 우여곡절 끝에 모인 연습장의 첫 날. 닉의 정부 올리브의 경호원 치치(채즈 팔민테리)로 인해 잠시 경직된 것 외엔 별 문제가 없이 끝난다. 연습이 진행되면서 작품에 대해 다들 한 마디씩 하고 심지어는 고치라고까지 하자 데이빗은 상처입는다. 그러나 치치의 멋진 아이디어를 결국은 수용하게 되고 나중에는 치치의 말을 그냥 받아적는 처지로까지 전락한다. 보스턴 공연은 매우 성공적이었으나 치치는 올리브가 '자신의 작품'을 망친다며 살해하고, 닉은 치치를 살해하는데...

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat is one of the great paintings of the world, and in "Sunday in the Park with George," book writer James Lapine and composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim bring a story based on the work brilliantly to life. While the painting depicts people gathered on an island in the Seine, the musical goes beyond simply describing their lives. It is an exploration of art, of love, of commitment. Seurat connected dots to create images; Lapine and Sondheim use connection as the heart of all our relationships. Winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. When one of his patients is found murdered, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Rice is visited by the investigating officer but refuses to give up any information. He's then visited by the patient's mistress, Brooke Reynolds, whom he quickly falls for despite her being a likely murder suspect. As the police pressure on him intensifies, Rice decides to attempt solving the case on his own and soon discovers that someone is trying to kill him as well.
