건축가인 딘(Dean Conrad: 크리스 이삭 분)의 집으로 어느 날 노부(Lama Norbu: 루오쳉 잉 분)라고 하는 티벳 승려가 찾아와 딘의 아들 제시(Jesse Conrad: 알렉스 위젠댄거 분)가 자신의 스승인 도제 스님(Lama Dorje: Ven. Geshe Tsultim Gyelsen 분)으로 환생한 아이일지도 모른다며, 제시를 부탄으로 데려가 환생 여부를 확인하게 해달라고 한다. 딘과 아내 리사(Lisa Conrad: 브리짓 폰다 분)는 인간이 환생한다는 말을 믿지 않았고, 제시가 혼란에 빠질까봐 걱정하면서도 승려들에게 호감을 느낀다. 그러던 중 딘의 절친한 친구가 파산하고 죽는 사고가 발생하자, 딘은 마음을 정리하기 위해 제시를 데리고 부탄으로 간다. 한편, 제시는 티벳 승려 노부가 준 '싯달타 왕자의 이야기'라는 책을 통해 싯달타(Siddhartha: 키누 리브스 분)가 왕자로 태어나서 행복한 나날을 보내다가 거리에서 생노병사의 고통을 보고 출가하여 부처님이 되기까지는 '중도'의 진리였으며, 이 세상의 모든 것은 인연에 따라 생겨났다 없어지는 무상한 것이기 때문에 거기에 집착하지 않아야 한다는 것과 연민과 사랑으로 주변을 대해야 한다는 것을 배우게 된다. 부탄에 도착하자 노부 스님은 환생 후보가 모두 세 사람이라며 나머지 환생 후보인 라주(Raju: 라주 랄 분)와 지타(Gita: Greishma Makar Singh 분)를 제시와 만나게 해준다. 사원에서 환생 여부를 확인하는 절차에서 세 아이가 모두 환생한 도제 스님으로 밝혀지는데...

Greed, corruption, ignorance, and disease. Midsummer, 1349: the Black Death reaches northern Germany. Minstrels go to Hamelin for the Mayor's daughter's wedding to the Baron's son. He wants her dowry to pay his army while his father taxes the people to build a cathedral he thinks will save his soul. A local apothecary who's a Jew seeks a treatment for the plague; the priests charge him with witchcraft. One of the minstrels, who has soothed the Mayor's daughter with his music, promises to rid the town of rats for the fee. The Mayor agrees, then renigs. In the morning, the plague, the Jew's trial, and the Piper's revenge come at once.
