맥킨(Macklin: 알렉 볼드윈 분)은 암흑가에서 명성이 높은 전문적인 도둑이다. 어느 날 그는 갱단의 일원인 라일(Riles: 로버트 미아노 분)로부터 한 인쇄 공장에서 2천5백만 달러 상당의 인지를 훔쳐 줄 것을 제의 받는다. 그러나 맥킨은 임무를 무사히 수행한 뒤 약속된 배당을 받고 헤어지지만 공항 경찰들의 추적을 받아 목숨만 부지하게 된다.

The man will not marry the woman as he has just been released from prison and cannot commit himself. He ends up working in a factory, while she gets a job as a maid. The two split up after he gets involved in a strike. She goes to school but ends up laid off from a good paying job. Later the two meet again. Both are surprised by the great changes in their lives since they have been apart.
