One of the key factors in Italian unification was the overthrow in 1860 of Francesco, the King of Naples and the two Sicilies, who went into elegant but impoverished exile in Rome with his Queen, Maria Sofia. This seriocomic drama follows the deposed royals as they adapt to their new lives. The former king has recognized the political finality of his deposition, but his queen has taken to traveling in men's clothing all over Italy trying to foment an uprising to restore them to the throne. She is also frantic to have a baby, an heir, but the king has become celibate as a kind of homage to his beloved mother; he spends all his time lobbying the Vatican to get her declared a saint.

1950년대의 시실리. 비토 가르가노와 미켈레 라브루쪼는 가난한 농부의 아들로 태어나 한 마을에서 자란 죽마고우. 패전국으로 가난과 실업과 범죄와 이념 갈등으로 이탈리아는 시달리고 있고, 30년대부터 마피아 본산인 시실리는 더욱 심하다. 마차로 곡물수송을 하던 비토와 미켈로는 트럭으로 곡물 수송하던 인부들과 시비가 벌어져 비토가 그중 한명을 죽인다. 마침 그 곁을 지나던 대지주 돈 쥬스또는 이를 단순사고로 처리해준다. 미켈레는 공산주의 이념에 물들어 농민을 선동 돈 쥬스또의 땅을 탈취하려 하는데 이에 돈 쥬스또는 비토를 유혹, 미켈로를 제거한다. 그후 비토는 승승장구, 이곳의 대부노릇을 한다. 그는 돈 쥬스또를 이용 대단위 건설 사업을 벌여 본격적인 마피아 사업을 시작한다. 그러나 종국에는 돈 쥬스또까지 제거하나 이탈리아에 불어닥친 마피아 소탕작전의 표적이 되어 재파에 회부된다. 교묘한 술책으로 재판에선 승리하나, 측근의 배신으로 결국 피살당하고 만다.

전 후의 이탈리아의 어수선했던 정치적 경제적 상황 탓에 치안까지도 엉망이었는데 시실리의 분리 독립을 지지했던 줄리아노는 알게 모르게 정계나 경찰, 시민은 물론 마피아의 지지까지도 받고 있었다. 문제는 정국이 안정이 되어 가면서였다. 어수선한 시기에 정권 획득을 위해 줄리아노를 이용하였던 정계나 경찰 그리고 마피아에게까지도 줄리아노는 뜨거운 감자로 남게 된다. 더군다나 그의 비망록이 불씨가 될 수 있었다. 결국 그는 주변의 치열한 이해 조직 사이에서 외국으로 탈출까지도 의도하였으나 경찰 조직은 마피아를 협박하여 줄리아노의 측근들을 제거하기 시작한다. 그리고 최 측근이었던 가스페라 피치오타를 회유하여 줄리아노와 이간질을 시키고 결국 그의 손에 줄리아노는 은거지에서 사살 당한다. 이 사실을 숨기기 위해 격전 중에 사살된 것으로 만들기 위해 그의 시신은 마당으로 옮겨지게 되고 죽은 시신위로 기관총 세례까지 받게 되지만... 지리한 법정 공방 끝에 줄리아노의 일당들은 주범을 제외하고는 대부분 석방이 된다. 줄리아노를 사살한 친구 가스페라 피치오타는 감옥 안에서 독살 당하고 그와 공모하였던 마피아 일원도 몇 년 후 길거리에서 피살당한다.
