40년대 초, 뉴욕의 한 노동조합에서 활약하던 잭(Jack McGurn: 데니스 퀘이드 분)은 회사측의 불의에 반대하다 일자리를 빼앗기고 일본인 히로시(Mr. Kawamura: 사브 시모노 분)가 경영하는 극장의 영사 기사로 취직한다. 그곳에서 히로시의 딸 릴리(Lily Kawamura: 탐린 토미타 분)와 사랑에 빠진 잭은 부모의 반대를 피해 외국인과의 결혼이 허용되는 시애틀로 도피하고, 잠시 행복을 만끽한다. 하지만 다시 노동조합의 일에 매달리는 잭을 릴리는 이해하지 못하고, 결국 둘은 일본의 진주만 공격이 시작되는 날 헤어지게 된다.
