크리스마스 이브날 아빠가 엄마, 아델(수잔 서랜드 분)과 심하게 다투고 집을 나간 뒤 딸, 앤(나탈리 포트만 분)은 엄마와 단 둘이 살게 된다. 엄마는 요란한 옷차림, 단정치못한 몸가짐, 그리고 폭포수처럼 쏟아지는 말 등 어른이라기 보다는 천방지축 아이와 같은 모습이다. 앤은 그런 엄마가 늘 못마땅할 뿐만 아니라 불안하다. 그러던 어느날, 딸을 배우로 만들고 싶어하는 엄마는 가진 재산을 모두 통털어 벤츠를 산 후 비버리힐즈로 떠나자고 한다. 그러나 딸인 앤은 정든 고향을 떠나는게 못내 불만으로 둘의 다툼은 시간이 갈수록 심각해진다. 결국 그들은 라스베가스에 정착하고 침시링 하나밖에 없는 서민 아파트에 보금자리를 꾸민다. 둘 뿐인 이들 모녀... 아델은 늘 이방인처럼 꿈속의 세상을 동경하며 욕구불만에 차 있지만 현실주의의 앤은 세상을 있는 그대로 받아들이며 낯선 이국 땅에서의 생활을 시작한다. 항상 의견차이로 대립하는 모녀. 비버리힐즈는 과연 그녀들에게 행복을 가져다 줄 것인가?
