2014년 9월 26일, 멕시코에서 6명이 사망하고 43명의 학생이 사라진다. 중국의 활동가이자 예술가인 아이웨이웨이는 실종자 가족의 이야기를 통해 사라진 이들을 복귀시킨다. 영화는 전통적인 다큐멘터리 형식을 통해 기교를 덜어내고 숫자로만 말해질 수 없는 개별적 비극과 역사를 드러내는 진술에 집중한다. 인터뷰는 사라진 아이들이 가족에게 사랑스럽고 소중한 존재일 뿐만 아니라 의지를 가지고 삶의 변화를 모색한 ‘사회적 실체’로서의 인간임을 드러낸다. 멕시코 정부의 인도주의적 위기를 보여주는 이 작품은 진실이 규명되지 않았을 뿐 아니라, 실종으로 인해 미지의 존재로 남은 아이들이 가족에게는 영원히 현존하는 ‘살아 있는 자’임을 이야기하고 있다.

이브는 멕시코시티 최고급 호텔의 메이드다. 영화는 손님이 떠난 방을 청소하고 침대를 정돈하고 욕실용품을 구비하는 그녀의 업무를 현미경으로 바라보듯 관찰한다. 종종 손님들이 두고 간 물건을 발견하기도 하고 또 어떤 손님들의 특별한 부탁을 들어주기도 하지만, 그녀의 일상은 익명의 손님들과 호텔 방 사이에서 무미건조하게 채워진다. 호텔은 마치 현대 멕시코 사회를 축소해놓은 듯한 공간 같다. 릴라 아빌레스의 데뷔작 는 호텔이라는 계급사회 가장 밑바닥에 있는 이브를 호텔의 다른 직원 그리고 손님들과 병치시키면서 그녀의 사회적, 계급적 위치를 끊임없이 환기시킨다. 한편 카메라는 이브가 일하는 모습을 숭고함이 느껴질 정도로 집요하고 정교하게 포착하면서, 관객들로 하여금 그녀의 노동을 또 다른 관점에서 바라보게끔 한다. 승진 하나만을 바라보고 묵묵히 성실하게 일해 오던 이브가 호텔 바깥으로 나오는 영화의 마지막은 오늘날 여성 노동자의 현실에 대해 영화가 던지는 어떤 강력한 코멘트처럼 다가온다. Narrated in the first person, the documentary tells testimonial filmmaker's memories from his childhood, when the revolution broke up the "loss and betrayal" of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) to the political principles that had been erected.

Bajo el Tacaná follows the lives of several migrant women as they are arrested in control posts and hostels across Mexico´s southern border, in the Soconusco region, run the risk of being deported at a migrant station in Tapachula, and visit places where they are forced or lured into prostitution by the Mexican authorities. Bajo el Tacaná uses the migrant´s testimonies and first-hand accounts from bystanders, such as a taxi driver in Tapachula and a doctor who tends the prostitutes to chronicle the atrocities that take place in the Mexico- Guatemala border. Voice-over adds meaning to the film, while the music conveys what we couldn´t or wouldn´t dare to record on video.
