탐정소설가인 45세의 알랑 꼴베와 그의 22세된 아름다운 아내 롤라는 결혼한 지 1년 되었으나 점차 식어가는 사랑을 느끼고 새로운 자극을 찾아 아이티라는 흑인 국가로 여행을 온다. 롤라는 한 부랑아로부터 지하철에서 추행을 당하다, 그를 칼로 찔렀던 생각하기 싫은 과거를 지니고 있다. 그런 롤라의 마음은 남편에 대한 다른 이유들과 함께 풀릴 줄 모르고, 알랑은 롤라가 다른 남자와 애정 행각을 벌이는 것에 고민한다. 그러던 중 술을 마쉬고 자신의 돈을 털려는 흑인을 우발적으로 살인 하게 된다. 남편의 살인을 알게 된 롤라는 그의 피묻은 옷과 신발을 태우고, 사회의 모든 시선으로부터 남편을 보호하려하지만, 살인 장면을 목격한 흑인 뗄오피 비주와 그의 약혼녀인 백인 중년의 여자 뤼쎄르 벌망스는 비밀을 지키는 대가로 5만달러를 요구한다. 롤랑은 돈을 마련하기 위해 출판사에 가불을 부탁하지만 거액이라 형편이 어렵자, 결국 롤라는 자신이 아끼는 팔찌를 팔아 돈을 마련한다. 롤라는 벌망스에게 전화를 해 돈을 건네주지만 그녀는 돈을 가로채 국외로 달아난다. 한편 복잡한 심정인 알랑은 경찰에 자수하지만 서장은 그의 말을 믿지 않고, 결국 롤랑은 비주에게 증인이 되어 줄 것을 부탁한다. 비주는 돈과 애인까지 잃고, 도리어 증인이 되어달라는 알랑을 살해하려다, 두 사람은 중상을 입고 병원에 입원한다. 남편을 찾아간 롤라는 병실에 누워있는 그에게 표출되지 않았던 진실한 사랑을 느낀다.
A diverse group of guests gather in a small hotel in Paris to contemplate the state of their lives in this pretentious drama. Joseph Goldman (Fernando Rey) is a washed-up Hollywood actor making a living in the dinner-theater circuit. Accompanied by his wife Sarah (Carole Regnier), Goldman meets Frederique (Berangere Bonvoisin), who is hiding from her former lover. French financier Arthur (Fabrice Luchini) hopes to get into the film industry and bends the ear of a British director (Michael Medwin). The talkative film has little action, and none of the characters evoke much interest or resolve their dilemma.
