여성 정신병원이었던 곳에 새로 연구소가 들어서고, ‘라이미스’라는 비밀 프로젝트가 진행된다. 문명과 미개인의 경계선을 뜻하는 라이미스는 일종의 인간 개화 프로그램으로, 피실험자들의 뇌를 이용해 성격, 행동양식, 기억 등을 조작하여 궁극적으로 그들의 정신을 지배하는 것이다. 어제 일조차 기억하지 못하는 피실험자들은 서로를 의심하고, 심지어는 탈출을 위한 살인도 마다하지 않는다. 한편, 아무것도 모른 채 신임 연구박사로 합류하게 된 다니엘은 이러한 비인간적인 프로그램을 못 견뎌 괴리에 빠진다. 그러던 중 자신조차 피실험자였음을 알게 되고 그들의 손아귀에서 벗어나려고 하지만, 결국 다시 붙잡히게 되는데...
