드럼(Drum: 켄 노튼 분)의 출생 비밀은 19세기 초 쿠바, 하나바 항의 흑인 노예 경매 시장에서 한 백인 여자가 자신의 성적인 만족을 얻기위해 사들인 튼튼한 아프리카 왕족 흑인과의 결합에서 탄생된다. 드럼은 백인들의 희롱과 학대 속에서 자신의 엄마가 벡인이란 사실도 모르는 채 하루 하루를 악몽 속에서 살아간다. 노예가 된 흑인들은 백인을 위해 자신의 친구와 투견처럼 싸워야 했고 튼튼한 씨받이로서 자식을 낳고, 그 자식은 팔려갔다. 드럼은 백인 어머니의 염려 속에 노예 상인에게 팔려가는데.

워렌은 흑인을 경멸하는 매우 악질인 농장주이지만 그의 아들 '해몬드'는 그나마 흑인들에게 관대한 편이다. 혼기가 찬 해몬드는 백인 블랑슈와 결혼을 하게 되고 첫날밤 그녀가 처녀가 아니었다는 사실을 알고 실망하여 부부라는 관계만 유지하는 결혼생활을 하게 된다. 그리고 아내인 블랑슈 대신 자신에게 처녀성을 받친 흑인 노예 엘렌과의 관계를 더 중요시하고 그녀와의 성관계를 통해서만 만족을 얻는다. 남편에게 사랑받지 못한다는 질투심과 절망감에 블랑슈는 해몬드에게 언제나 충성을 받치는 만딩고족 미드를 침실로 불러 강제로 성관계를 맺는다. 그렇게 블랑슈는 임신을 하게 되고...

Rachel arrives in New York from her Amish community intent on becoming a dancer. Unfortunately Billy Minsky's Burlesque is hardly the place for her Dances From The Bible. But the show's comedian Raymond sees a way of wrong-footing the local do-gooders by announcing the new Paris sensation "Mme Fifi" and putting on Rachel's performance as the place is raided. All too complicated, the more so since her father is scouring the town for her and both Raymond and his straight-man Chick are falling for Rachel.

Integration Report 1, Madeline Anderson's trailblazing debut, was the first known documentary by an African American female director. With tenacity, empathy and skill, Anderson assembles a vital record of desegregation efforts around the country in 1959 and 1960, featuring footage by documentary legends Albert Maysles and Richard Leacock and early Black cameraman Robert Puello, singing by Maya Angelou, and narration by playwright Loften Mitchell. Anderson fleetly moves from sit-ins in Montgomery, Alabama to a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington, D.C. to a protest of the unprosecuted death in police custody of an unarmed Black man in Brooklyn, capturing the incredible reach and scope of the civil rights movement, and working with this diverse of footage, as she would later say, “like an artist with a palette using different colors.”
