A bus is setting out to Calcutta from a village in West Bengal. Meenakshi Iyer, who is from a strict orthodox Hindu background, is leaving to Chennai for her husband, with her young child, after the vacation with her parents. By chance, she gets a co-passenger who is also to Chennai, Rajah, a photographer, introduced by one of the friends of her father. During the journey they build a good relationship. But a Hindu-Muslim communal riot sets out in the meantime, in some areas they had to travel. Then she comes to face the fact that Rajah is not a Hindu but a Muslim whose real name is Jehangir. Even though she curses herself at that time while some Hindu fanatics evade their bus she saves him introducing as Mr. Iyer. But they have to reach their destination while the other passengers know Rajah as no one else but Mr. Iyer.

Circa 1940 in Trinidad, still a British Colony, lives Ganesh Ramseyor, of East Indian origin, along with his wife, Leela. He longs to reach out to people, especially to Hindus, in order to promote the Hindu Faith, and be known as a writer. He does get considerable success, so much so that he becomes famous as a miracle worker, having cured a man of sharing intimacy with his bicycle; prevented a man from believing that he can fly; and convincing a young woman to end her fast. His fame spreads all over the island and thousands throng to seek his blessings, which he does dole out quite benevolently, without charging any fees from the poor and the needy. He then decides to spread his wings by challenging the local politician Pandit Narayan Chandrashekhar alias Cyrus T., and takes over The Hindu Organization, thence opening his way to a seat in the prestigious Member of the Legislative Assembly

Kunhikuttan, a famous Kathakali dancer, meets Subhadra, a woman from an upper caste family, who falls in love with his character rather than himself.

Mansi, played by Aruna Irani the elder sister has to take up professional singing after her father's death and to support the family. The film focuses mainly on the female characters and traces how the younger sibling Bansi played by Shabana Azmi regains her identity.

데벤(Deven)은 대학에서 힌디 문학을 가르치고 있다. 하지만 그가 진짜 관심을 갖고 있는 것은 우르두어다. 데벤은 잡지사 편집장의 부탁으로 우르두어 시의 살아있는 전설이라 할 수 있는 누르(Nur)를 인터뷰하게 된다. 인도의 유명 시인인 누르는 그의 추종자들과 여러 명의 부인들, 친척들을 거느리며 편안한 삶을 영위하고 있다. 들뜬 마음으로 누르를 만나기 위해 보팔(Bhopal)로 떠난 데벤은 뚱뚱한 술주정뱅이인 그의 모습에 짐짓 놀라고 만다. 데벤은 누르의 시를 녹음하기 위해 낡은 테이프 녹음기를 살 돈을 모으는가 하면, 누르의 첫 번째 부인 사피야(Safiya)를 매수하기도 한다. 매음굴에 방을 얻어 일주일 동안 누르와 함께 있으며 그의 시를 녹음하려 하지만 녹록지가 않다. 끊임없이 나타나는 자칭 누르의 팬들 역시 방해만 될 뿐이다. 누르의 아름다운 둘째 부인 베검(Begum)은 시인으로 인정받고 싶어 하는 여성이다. 하지만 데벤은 베검을 무시하고, 누르와 마찬가지로 데벤 역시 자신의 처자식에게 무관심하다. 결국 실망만 안고 돌아온 데벤은 누르가 보낸 소포를 하나 받게 된다. 그 안에 누르의 시들이 들어 있다. 그리고 누르가 죽음을 앞두고 두려워하고 있었다는 걸 알게 된다. 19세기 인도 사티푸르, 더글러스 리버스(크리스토퍼 카제노브)는 그의 아내 올리비아(그레타 스카치)가 더 이상 병원에 있지 않아도 된다는 얘기를 듣는다. 아내에 대한 얘기를 듣고는 리버스는 눈물을 흘린다. 그리고 시간이 흘러 1982년 사티푸르, 올리비아의 손녀인 앤(줄리 크리스티)은 한 남자로부터 올리비아에 대한 얘기를 전해 듣는다. 그렇게 앤은 인도에 도착해서 올리비아의 행적을 추적하게 된다. 그리고 다시 영화는 19세기로 넘어가고 인도의 중요한 행사에 초대된 올리비아를 보여준다. 올리비아는 남편과 함께 당시 인도 영국인 상류사회의 모임에 참석해 많은 얘기를 나누게 된다. 그 모임에서 여러 다른 부인들과도 만나지만 그런 것에는 별 관심이 없다. 그러면서 알게 된 인도의 지배자 나와브(샤시 카푸르)와 함께 나들이를 떠나기도 한다. 나와브와 그 하수인들과 함께 게임을 하면서 즐거이 시간을 보낸다. 그러니까 그 영국인 상류사회로부터는 한 발짝 비껴난 인물이다. 다시 현재로 돌아오면 한 인도 남자와 함께 올리비아를 연구하던 앤이, 당시 나와브과 사랑에 빠졌던 올리비아의 전철을 그대로 밟게 되는 것을 보게 된다. 그렇게 앤은 당시 온갖 스캔들의 주인공이었던 올리비아의 길을 따르면서 자신의 삶을 반추하게 된다.

미국 특수부대의 윌라드 대위는 고향에 돌아갔다가 아내가 내민 이혼장에 도장을 찍고 다시 정글로 돌아온다. 혼돈과 막연한 갈망에 시달리던 윌라드에게 떨어진 임무는 캄보디아에 자신의 왕국을 건설한 커츠 대령을 암살하라는 것. 커츠 대령은 한때 가장 뛰어난 군인으로 인정받았으나 미국의 통제를 벗어나 캄보디아에서 독자적인 왕국을 거느리고 있다. 윌라드 대위는 4명의 병사들과 함께 커츠 대령을 찾아 나선다. 폭염과 광기로 가득한 전투를 겪으면서 두려움과 공포로 이성을 잃어가던 그들은 마침내 커츠 대령의 왕국에 도착한다. 그리고 그곳에서 윌라드 대위는 상상을 초월하는 진실을 마주하게 되는데...
