오호 시대, 중국 사천지방에 촉산이란 곳이 있었다. 그중 한 곳인 곤륜산으로 사파의 마황 유천이 침입하자 곤륜파의 장문인 고월은 자신의 제자 현천종에게 곤륜파의 병기인 월금륜을 넘기고 그를 피신시킨다. 그리고 자신은 유천과 싸우다 죽는다. 200년 후 유천은 더욱 강력한 모습으로 다시 나타나 이번에는 아미산을 공격한다. 아미파의 장문인 백미는 호천경을 이용해 유천을 막고 아미파의 제자인 단진자와 현천종이 여기에 합세한다. 그들은 유천을 마의 동굴 안으로 몰아넣는 데 성공하지만 곧 자신들이 유천의 계략에 넘어갔다는 사실을 알게 된다.

"Master Q" is a popular comic book series character in Hong Kong. Each comic book is usually made up of many different situational stories, with 8 frmaes making up a story in 1 page. In short, it is like the newspaper comics that you see in America but in a book form. The movie is about how Master Q and his 2 friends Mr. Chung and Potato are out looking for jobs but accidentally cause an traffic accident for Mandy (Cecilia Cheung) and Fred (Nicholas Tse). As a result, both have lost their memories and due to circumstances, they have become enemies... but then, true love will eventually reunite (with a lot of help from Master Q and Potato).

1930년대 일본이 중국을 침공하는 바람에 상해에 있던 서커스단은 광주로 옮겨가게 된다. 서커스단의 곡예사 의동은 숙부를 찾아 광주에 가지만 숙부는 억울하게 옥살이를 하고 있다. 광주에 주둔한 용운 일파는 아편을 만들기 위해 담배공장을 인수하고 서커스단원들은 공장에서 일하도록 유혹을 하게 되고, 단장의 사위가 유혹에 넘어가 아편중독자가 되어 이용만 당한 채 죽는 일이 발생한다. 의동과 서커스 단원들은 그들과의 한판 승부를 준비하고 그들의 묘기를 복수의 칼로 이용한다.

후당이 후연에게 멸망당하고 장안 공주(이가흔 분)는 옥퉁소 하나만을 가지고 유군웅과 그의 아내 소정의 보호를 받으며 피신한다. 공주의 옥퉁소를 이용하여 많은 재물을 찾을 수 있다는 것을 안 연국사는 공주를 죽이고 옥퉁소를 차지하려고 한다. 연국사에게 생포당한 유군웅이 재물에 눈이 어두어 공주를 배신하고 옥퉁소를 훔쳐 연국사에게 마치려하자 이를 눈치챈 공주는 위기를 모면하지만 유군웅과 소정 부부 사이는 금이가고 소정은 계속해서 공주를 보호한다. 우연히 하후곡이란 곳에서 후당에게 멸망당했던 후진의 태자 하후당을 만난 공주가 자신의 신분을 밝히지 않은채 하후당의 도움을 여러번 받으면서 두 사람은 점점 사랑에 빠진다. 하후당의 고모는 빨리 독고구검을 연마하여 나라를 되찾으려고 한다. 독고구검을 연마하기 위해서는 모든 정욕을 버려야 했기 때문에 고모는 하후당에게 공주를 죽일것을 명령한다. 고모의 명령을 거절하던 하후당은 공주를 잡으러 온 연국사에 의해 무고한 사람들이 몰살당하고 고모가 부상을 입자 공주의 진짜 신분을 알고 공주가 자신을 이용했다고 생각한다. 극도의 분노로 독고구검을 완수하지만 하후당에게는 마가 낀다. 하후당이 독고구검으로 연국사를 죽이고 나서 공주를 죽이려 할때 공주의 피가 그의 검에 묻자 마에서 깨어나게 된다. 마침내 두 사람은 모든 부와 명예를 뒤로하고 옥퉁소를 버린채 두 사람만의 행복을 찾아간다.
