1960년대 체코 슬로바키아의 외과 의사인 토마스(대니얼 데이 루이스)는 바람둥이다. 병원에서 간호사와도 섹스를 하는 섹스 중독증에 가까운 인간이다. 그에게는 사비나(레나 올린)라는 멋진 애인이 있지만, 다른 여자와의 관계도 포기하지 않는다. 어느날 시골에 갔다가 그 곳의 식당 종업원으로 일하는 테레사(줄리엣 비노시)와 하룻밤 보낸다. 그후 테레사가 그를 찾아와 함께 산다. '프라하의 봄'이라고 불리는 1968년 소련의 체코 침공으로 사비나는 토마스에게 언제든 도움이 필요하면 청하라고 하며 혼자 피난을 떠난다. 한편 테레사는 카메라를 들고 '프라하의 봄'을 정면으로 찍는다.

A dramatic story from the setting of a youth de tention center. Youngster Jakub, out of delusory solidarity, gets convicted of theft and goes to prison in place ofthe "sheriff" of his gang. He naively hopes that the sheriff will appreciate his gesture and leaves the stolen goods in a safe hideaway to later divide them fairly among the gang members. This conviction gives Jakub the strength to endure the unbearable conditions in the center. But reality is often much harsher than naive ideals and hollow relations in the gang.

A poignant overview of how short life can be, this interesting drama from Czech director Vojetch Jasny is divided into four separate segments. In the first skit, a young child's impressions are observed as his newborn baby sister becomes a part of the family. In the second, a young woman falls in love for the first time one summer, and in the third, a tough, older peasant woman battles against the farming cooperatives. Finally, in the last segment, everything comes full circle as a woman who is about to become a grandmother dies while her daughter-in-law has not yet given birth.
