Josh Townsend finds himself living in New Mexico after his father's new job requires the family to move from their home in Utah. While acclimating to his new surroundings, Josh becomes involved with a group of teens attempting to preserve the buffalo and Navajo traditions. Along the way he makes friends and learns important lessons about life in this Disney Channel Original movie.

The film threads together four stories, taking us into the life of a stressed-out Mohawk stockbroker in Manhattan; a young Inupiat girl sent to live with her grandmother in Barrow, Alaska; a Navajo gang member who must find his core values in his reservation on the mesas of New Mexico; and a Quechua healer in Peru, attempting to save a sick child. Each story explores what it means to belong to a specific community. A Thousand Roads is a fictional work, produced by National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) to explore the human context of the NMAI’s collections. The film is striking visually, and presents through its beauty and its stories an imaginative entry into knowing about Native people living in the vast indigenous geography that comprises the Americas. Rather than presenting a conventional historical perspective, the film is composed of short contemporary fictions about individuals, grounding them in emotional truths to which an audience can easily relate.

남북 전쟁이 북군의 승리로 끝이 날 무렵 미주리 주의 산골에서 아내와 아들을 데리고 평화롭게 살아가는 조시 웨일즈에게 재앙이 닥친다. 북군의 끄나풀이 되어 강도질을 일삼는 테릴의 무리들이 조시의 집을 덮쳐 아들을 죽이고 아내를 겁탈한 후 역시 살해한다. 복수심에 불타는 조시는 싸늘한 킬러가 되어 남부군 잔당에 합류하는데 당시 리더였던 플레처가 배반을 하여 동료들을 모두 잃고 조시는 부상당한 제이미만 데리고 인디언 보호거주지로 향한다. 테릴은 조시 웨일즈의 목에 거액의 현상금을 붙여 만나는 사람마다 조시 웨일즈를 죽이려 든다. 이 와중에 제이미는 부상을 견디지 못하고 죽고 조시 혼자 인디언 구역에 은신한다. 조시는 그 곳에서 떠돌이 인디언 노인 와티를 만나 남부군 저항군이 아직 멕시코에 있다는 말을 듣고 그와 함께 멕시코로 향한다. 조시는 가는 도중 산타 리오라는 마을에서 인디언 코만치족과 무기 거래를 하는 도적 집단인 코만체로 무리들에게 강도를 당한 사라와 그녀의 딸 로라를 구해 사라의 죽은 아들의 집으로 온다. 한편 코만치족은 자신들이 거래하던 코만체로가 조시에게 죽음을 당하자 복수를 하려하는데 조시는 단신의 몸으로 그 부족을 찾아가 협상하는데...
