Though he has managed to become a professor at an early age, a supposedly liberal young man has neglected developing his relationship skills. Even though he forms an attachment to a young woman whom he had been helping with the task of finding work and even marries her, he is appalled to learn that she is pregnant with another man's child. At the same time, his political convictions have been put to the test, and he has effectively shown that he was not as serious about them as he (and others) thought he was. Disappointed in himself and in his life, he leaves his new bride and attempts to find consolation in an affair.
Four men, each peculiar in his own way, embark on a quest to reason with the estranged wife of the protagonist. This film is considered to be Ghatak's autobiographical film.
Reena was a very honest/beautiful and tomboy type village girl who lived with her grandfather in East Bengal. She developed a very close relationship with her simple style of living. But Partition of India creates problems for them. Reena had to came to Kolkata in her maternal uncles home . But here she faced a totally different scenario. The lifestyles were too different. She was not able to adjust properly. In a social gathering a local Entrepreneur Mr. Bagchi observed it but he began to like Reena. After a while they got married together. Then they were blessed with a child . But Reena was not all comfortable with her child’s value system and psychology. So a complication was born between them. This is a story of different perspectives who forced to live life together bonded in a relationship.
After an old college friend offers him a job at an iron foundry, the upright and honest Ishwar leaves a shanty town on the outskirts of Calcutta where he lives with a group of refugees from East Bengal. With plans to forge a solid living for himself, sister Sita and Abhiram, an orphaned boy he offers a home to, Ishwar is accused of selling out and deserting his people.
1950년대, 브리구와 샨타가 이끄는 두 극단은 서로 경쟁 관계에 있다. 샨타의 극단에서 활동하는 아누수야는 브리구의 열정에 감동하여 그의 연극에 출연하고, 이는 동료들의 분노를 일으킨다. 두 극단은 공동으로 연극을 준비하지만, 샨타측의 의도적인 실수로 브리구는 난처한 상황에 처하게 된다. 파드마 강가에서 브리구와 아누수야는 둘 다 방글라데시로부터 옮겨 온 피난민이라는 것을 알게 되고, 곧 사랑에 빠진다.
벵갈 분할 시기. 피난민 가정의 딸 니타는 가족의 생계를 위해 자신을 희생하며 밤낮으로 일한다. 큰 아들 샹카르는 성악가가 되기를 원하고, 니타는 애인 사낫이 그녀의 가족을 부양할 수 있기를 바라며 결혼을 미룬다. 그러나 동생 지타는 니타가 머뭇거리는 사이 사낫과 결혼을 해 버린다. 아버지와 남동생마저 사고를 당하자, 니타는 가족을 위해 힘겹게 노동을 하다 뒤늦게 자신이 폐결핵에 걸렸다는 것을 알게 된다.
