초대 체코슬로바키아 대통령의 아들이자 외교관과 외무부 장관이었지만 그 죽음은 아직도 비밀로 남겨져 있는 얀 마사리크의 삶을 담아내고 있다. 하지만 얀 마사리크의 삶에도 많은 비밀이 숨겨져 있다. 그는 후회없이 인생을 즐겼으며 여자와 음악을 사랑했다. 그의 마음에는 불타오르는 예술가의 혼과 외교관으로서의 도덕성이 계속 충돌했다. 이 극적인 이야기는 제2차 세계대전이 시작되기 직전으로 거슬러 올라간다. 30년대에 마사리크의 외교 경력은 최고조를 찍었다. 그는 영국에 거주하며 강대국들을 설득해 체코슬로바키아 편에 서서 독일의 침략을 막으려고 노력한다. 훌륭한 연설가, 평생 함께할 재밌고도 사랑스러운 동반자, 삶을 실컷 즐기는 사람으로 칭송받던 그도 어두운 면을 가지고 있었다. 그는 알코올, 약물 그리고 지속적인 자해로 자신의 이름이 주는 책임과 자신의 삶에서 도피하려고 한다. 당시 주영체코대사로 있던 그가 공식석상에 나타나지 않았으며 외교 관계자 및 친구와도 관계를 끊는다. 그렇게 몇 달간 미국 어딘가로 사라진다. 이 영화는 역사적인 배경을 바탕으로 매력적이면서도 불안정하고 자신의 삶을 망치는 남자와 조국의 미래를 위한 그의 헛된 투쟁에 관한 스릴 넘치는 이야기다.
