First Lieutenant Shun'ichi Maki of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force is a prestigious F-15 Eagle jet pilot (or "driver" as he is called in the film). A lifelong fan of flying since he was a child, being a pilot is his ultimate dream. Unfortunately, his duties distance himself from his wife, Yoko, who always ends up being neglected, and his son, Tsugumu, who has a congenital blood disease and has a high risk of dying at a young age.Maki decides to quit the Air Force to devote more time to his family and to spend whatever is left for his son. He takes a part-time job as a commercial tour guide run by a kindly group of people who allow him time to work and to also take care of his family.

A couple flees Tokyo, their family and friends. The girlfriend is a member of a rock band. She is dating the man, but friends and family are against it compelling her to move away. They stay at an inn in an area in which they know no one. One inn employee finds out about their dilemma and introduces them to a local farmer who offers them work and a home.

14살 때 교통사고를 당해 10년 동안 혼수상태에 빠져있던 요시이(니시지마 히데토시)는 어느 날 갑자기 기적적으로 깨어난다. 10년이라는 세월 동안 그의 가족은 뿔뿔이 흩어져버렸고, 깨어난 그를 찾아온 사람은 가해자와 아버지의 친구인 후지모리(야쿠쇼 코지)뿐이다. 요시이는 후지모리의 도움을 받아 새로운 생활을 시작하게 된다. 하지만 그가 진정으로 바라는 것은 사고 전처럼 온가족이 함께 모여 화목하게 사는 것이다. 소식을 들은 가족들이 하나둘씩 그를 찾아와 곁에 머무르지만, 잃어버린 10년은 쉽게 회복되지 않는다. 시간을 잃어버린 청년이 느끼는 존재에 대한 불안감을 절제된 롱테이크와 롱쇼트로 표현해냄으로써, 손쉬운 감동보다는 적극적인 사유를 요구하는 작품. 극적인 소재를 다루면서도 오히려 특별한 사건이 일어나지 않는 일상을 무덤덤하고 담담하게 그려내고 있다. 1999년 베를린영화제 출품작. 이 작품은 감동보다는 사유를 요구하는 구로사와 감독의 의지를 드러낸다. 다작을 생산하는 감독으로 알려진 그는 독특한 작가성을 인정받고 있는 반면, 계속되는 실험 지향적 성향을 우려하는 목소리도 적지 않다. Junk Food consists of four intertwining stories. The first and fourth sections show the morning routine of an blind, old Japanese woman, waking up, buying bread and milk, praying at the family alter; however, it is the second segment where the true story begins.
